Dojin Told No One

Dojin told no one.
It was a plan meant to keep anyone from getting hurt.
So a person got hurt first.
Yun Sera checked the correction terminal's connection light on the way to the sealed records room at the North Shelter. Team 7's shared screen was entirely gray. But inside her own command badge, something pulsed at six second intervals.
It was the lag that came when a hidden correction was running.
"Coordinates."
Mina answered. "North records room. User field blank. Correction strength four percent. There's a person record attached, so calling it a test feels wrong."
Sera opened the vehicle door with her left hand. When her right arm brace hit the doorframe, pain jumped into the inner shoulder. Her first thought was that this wasn't the moment to tell Eunha.
That thought made her say it faster.
"Pain level seven. Keep moving. Contact treatment after arrival."
Eunha didn't push and just logged it. "Recheck after arrival. Command and treatment kept separate."
The records room server was scheduled to be wiped in forty one minutes. Dawon's source deletion confirmation still had fifty two minutes left. The review of Sera's command suspension was two hours and thirty four minutes away. Of the three clocks, Dojin had picked the shortest one.
Inside the records room, Baek Dojin sat alone in front of the sealed terminal.
The test clause he had written was short.
A vanished vote frame is not deleted until the relevant witness gives final confirmation.
It is not made public.
It is not linked to other records.
Dojin had thought of it as a sentence that only stopped deletion, without altering a person. So he had gotten neither the team's vote nor Sera's approval. If a correction cost came up, he planned to exclude it from his own contract eligibility.
But the "relevant witness" field held the hash of a living person.
He was the security officer who had tried to manually open a door during a no fault test broadcast and had become an accessory to betrayal by doing so. He had agreed to let the team cross reference the incident time and the raw wristband data internally. He had not agreed to any modification of his role. He still maintained his request to delete the record before it went public.
Dojin's clause stopped the deletion until his final confirmation.
The security officer's request said to delete it now.
Two vetoes collided inside the same body.
Across from the records room, in the emergency corridor, the security officer's wristband turned red.
The final witness does not leave the scene until the record is saved.
He had been about to go home and stopped in front of the corridor door. The door pulled his wristband toward the records room, while the emergency handle swung open outward. One arm moved in, his body moved out.
"Open it!"
By the time Sera reached the records room, the door was shut with two fingers of his right hand caught in it. Blood dripped down the handle. The security officer kept kicking the door while also repeatedly pressing the deletion request on the terminal.
Dojin took his hand off the correction screen.
"Halt execution. Preserve original text. No additional clauses."
Correction strength dropped from four percent to zero. The role clause didn't vanish instantly. A command already attached to a person left thirty seconds remaining even after the source was stopped.
Sera swallowed the order to cut power to the records room. If the server went dark too, Dawon's original source confirmation and the victim's deletion request could disappear together.
"Taeho, detach just the door hinge. Keep server power on. Eunha, get the contact range."
Taeho loosened the lower hinge with an emergency tool. Eunha asked through the door, "Can I touch the wrist and fingers?"
"Get them out. Right hand only."
Sera and Dojin didn't touch the door. Taeho lifted the hinge, Eunha supported the fingers. The security officer pulled his body back. When the thirty seconds ended, the wristband turned gray again.
Two lacerations. Suspected fracture in the second finger. Bruising on the right shoulder.
Eunha gave him two options: on site immobilization followed by hospital transfer, or an immediate ambulance. He chose the ambulance.
Eunha separately asked whether she could photograph the injury. The security officer agreed to treatment photos but refused an incident disclosure version. The bloody handle could be made public, but his own hand and voice could not. He chose to keep the lost wages internal to the team and disclose the total treatment cost externally.
"I'll contact my family myself. Don't have the center call for me."
Taeho checked the ambulance seating. One union representative would ride along; Team 7 would not board. Following the injured man to the hospital after causing his injury couldn't be called aftercare.
The deletion request still remained on the security officer's wristband. Dojin's correction stopping didn't automatically restore his choice. Eunha attached the deletion request case number to the outside of the new medical form. Consent to treatment and record deletion weren't the same signature.
"Will the record be deleted?" he asked.
Dojin started to answer, but Sera raised her hand. "Whose answer he wants to hear comes first."
The security officer didn't look at Dojin. "I'll hear it from a lawyer."
Hyeonju opened a remote screen. "Your existing deletion request remains valid. The correction log from just now is incident evidence, so it can't be deleted immediately, but your identity and the raw wristband data will be sealed separately. You can contest the preservation of the original."
"Will he fix it again?"
"I'm going to make sure he can't, for now."
Hyeonju showed action, not a promise. She revoked the execution key on Dojin's terminal and changed access to the records room to read only. The scope of incident log copies was limited to the correction clause, execution time, halt time, and the resulting harm. The security officer's work shift and family contact information were excluded.
Dojin didn't object.
Sera said the execution key should be destroyed completely. Hyeonju objected immediately.
"I agree with the revocation. But if it's destroyed, we can't verify the unauthorized execution or the automatic co-signature log."
"What about the risk of it being turned back on?"
"I'll keep the execution key, and I'll separate the playback key to Mina. No one person will hold both."
"And Dojin's access?"
"Even the read only access stops after his incident statement. But I won't take away his right to view his own log or his right to object."
Hyeonju neither protected Dojin nor turned him into a punishment tool. She split the authority. Execution went to legal, playback to analysis, scope of harm to medical, and the conditions for his return to the field to Sera. What was left to Dojin was only his own statement and his right to argue against it.
Sera agreed with that arrangement while also writing down her objection. There were only thirty one minutes left before the server was wiped, which meant a risk from verification delay. Even so, she opposed giving execution and playback to the same person.
Hyeonju opened the incident classification.
Unauthorized test correction.
No consent from the affected party for role modification.
No field command, no team vote.
The thirty second residual after the halt had no secured escape route.
Automatic co-signature intervention.
Four of the five lines were Dojin's own choices. The subject of the last line was undetermined. Hyeonju separated the incident report so the undetermined line couldn't bury the other four.
After the ambulance doors closed, Sera went back into the records room. Blood-wiped absorbent cloth still lay on the floor. Watching it, Dojin opened the screen showing his own contract cost.
Unauthorized test correction, four percent.
Fourteen days deducted from consensual correction log access eligibility.
Automatic co-signature intervention.
Approval chain 7C-19.
Officer in charge ( ).
Dojin pointed at the last two lines with his finger. "I didn't request that."
Hyeonju cut him off. "That fact doesn't reduce your responsibility for the unauthorized execution. The subject and purpose of the automatic intervention will be investigated separately."
"Understood."
Sera didn't ask Dojin why he'd done it. She didn't want to give him a seat to offer excuses from first.
"Order of harm recovery."
Dojin read it out. "First, treatment costs and lost wages are paid as team incident compensation, not out of my own cost. Second, the affected party's deletion request is kept separate from preservation of incident evidence. Third, the unauthorized clause and the automatic co-signature original are sealed. Fourth, I surrender my correction authority."
"What about good intentions?"
"Not recorded."
"Why not?"
"Because it isn't grounds for exemption."
Dojin didn't say that he had wanted to stop Sera's command suspension and the server wipe alone. Not because that desire had disappeared, but because he wasn't going to place it ahead of the cause of the incident.
Sera got angrier. Not because he had picked the correct answer. It was because the same man who had given up correcting without a driver's consent, and had shut the door on the source protection correction too, had this time circled back through that same door under the name of "just fixing the record."
And because she herself had been looking for that same door.
After leaving the laundromat, Sera had tried to contact Dojin three times. She had wanted to ask whether he could restore just the silent clip before the command suspension went through. She hadn't sent it, but instead of mapping out an alternative route, she had kept calculating the empty space where his ability should have been. The responsibility for what Dojin had executed in secret and the responsibility for Sera having expected a shortcut were not the same. But being different was no reason to hide the latter.
"I was waiting on your correction too." Sera said. "I didn't tell you to. I didn't give permission either. But I left a blank in my plan and waited for you to fill it."
Dojin lifted his head.
"Don't use that to shrink your responsibility. I'll fix my own command plan myself."
"Understood."
"You thought you hadn't touched a person."
"Yes."
"With a person's hash in it?"
"I only saw it as a record identifier."
"Next time?"
"A living identifier gets treated as a person."
"Don't decide that sentence alone either."
Dojin shut his mouth.
Hyeonju opened a blank authority return form. "The temporary surrender period and the conditions for reinstatement need review from the victim, the field, legal, and medical. This isn't being processed as a permanent forfeiture on Assistant Manager Baek's signature alone."
Dojin was looking at the field that would erase all his eligibility. The habit of thinking that paying the biggest cost ends the responsibility moved first again.
Hyeonju deactivated that field. "Permanent self punishment isn't a recurrence prevention procedure."
Sera called out the criteria for his reinstatement test herself.
"First, a simulated environment with zero living records. Second, the affected adult reads the clause, explains it in their own words, then gives separate consent. Third, the execution key is held by a function other than the one who wrote the clause. Fourth, a vote and stated objections from three functions. Fifth, an escape route secured through the full thirty seconds remaining after a halt."
Dojin asked, "If I pass, do I return?"
"No. Passing the test and rebuilding trust are separate."
"I'm sorry."
"Decided later."
"Confirmed."
Sera added her own condition too. "I won't wait on correction authority like an emergency exit either. I won't build command plans on the assumption that you'll fix things quickly. Put that promise into my own return review as well."
Hyeonju recorded it. Sera's command plans would be required to include an alternate route for when consensual correction wasn't available. Fixing only Dojin's test would let the team use him as a shortcut again.
That was when an emergency signal came in from East Shelter 3.
The entire shelter had been locked into the role of "witnesses waiting for the commander's secret lover." Six entrances sealed. Fifty two civilians. No field correction authority.
Sera's badge was still yellow. Dojin's execution key was in Hyeonju's hands.
Before he could say "I'm sorry," Dojin pushed the terminal toward Hyeonju.
