The Savior and the Traitor

The shelter people called Sera a savior, then three seconds later a traitor.

Sera said she hated both words.

Dojin took that line as the operation name.

Jang Mina added a parenthetical next to it.

Hate Both (relationship rulings prohibited, rescue people first).

On the scoreboard at Guryong District Gym, role scores lit up instead of basketball scores. Savior Yoon Sera 43. Traitor Yoon Sera 46. Every time a passenger's testimony video played, the numbers flipped. In the temporary shelter zone under the stands, red numbered tags and blue numbered tags pushed against each other.

Mina counted numbers from behind the main camera.

"Switch cycle at 3.2 seconds. Margin of error 0.4. Every time someone declares whose side they're on, the roles flip. A very efficient hell."

Taeho laid out shock absorbing mats on the gym floor as he answered.

"Inventory twenty four, three exits, hell has no returns. Conclusion. Clear the aisles first."

"Data comes first."

"If people get crushed, data becomes a keepsake."

"Correction. Aisles first."

Mina switched the first panel of the dashboard to a map of people's locations. The camera kept spinning, but she left the broadcast button off. On her own channel, the search term "secret lovers survive day four" was climbing by twenty thousand hits a minute. If she just flipped the switch, she could win back her frozen operating rights.

The original footage is not for sale.

She kept her own word first.

A scream came from the gym's north entrance. A middle aged man cast in the traitor role was knocked down by the automatic door. Three seconds later, when he switched to savior, the door dragged him toward the outside of the gym. In his hand was a broadcast camera holding the original footage of the Guryong Station rescue. It was the only surviving on-site original after the account server cache had been wiped.

"One person, one original. Tug of war at the north door." Mina said.

Sera raised her command baton with her left arm. Her right arm, the fixed cannon, stayed locked. "Taeho, cut power to the north door. Mina, warn of the role switch. Dojin, correction text standing by. I'll set the order."

Dojin turned on his terminal. "Confirmed. Sera commands, I handle correction text. Mina reads the scope of impact, Taeho holds physical veto. What's the stop signal?"

"Stop."

"From anyone?"

Sera scanned the shelter zone. "The person involved, command, logistics, analysis. Any one of the four, immediately."

Hyunju's face appeared on the wall terminal. A voice link from the Special Audit Office.

"Log Legal's dissenting opinion too. We object to any blanket deletion of all roles. There's no witness consent and we don't know the reflux targets."

"Logged." Mina typed quickly. "Field approves, analysis approves, logistics conditionally approves, Legal objects to broad deletion. This motion covers only the north door zone and camera preservation."

An electronic voting panel opened below the scoreboard. Three functional approvals and one dissent. Only then did Dojin's correction authority shift from gray to white.

"Now you can proceed." Mina said.

Taeho opened the north door control box. "Cut main power and the fire shutter drops too. Two manual supports, forty seconds before they give."

"Civilians first, within thirty seconds." Sera ordered. "The camera can be lost."

The middle aged man shook his head violently. "Without this footage, I become the liar!"

Sera shouted at him. "Your wrist comes before the video. Whether you let go is your choice. But if that door closes, your arm breaks."

His number tag turned red.

The traitor must destroy the evidence.

His hand moved against his own will, trying to smash the camera on the floor. Three seconds later, blue light spread over him.

The savior must protect the evidence alone.

This time he clutched the camera to his chest, blocking anyone from approaching. Two roles tore the same man's arm in opposite directions.

Dojin brought up the correction text. "Reading to the affected party. 'The holder of the north door camera has no obligation to destroy or monopolize the rescue evidence. Prioritize your own physical safety. Whether to hand over the original will be decided again after the rescue.' Do you understand?"

The man asked through clenched teeth. "If I let go, who protects the footage?"

Mina zoomed in not on the camera lens but on the storage slot. "Even if the body drops, the memory card is recording redundantly. One copy stays on the device, one auto replicates to the ceiling relay. Currently at 78 percent. I'll display the original's hash on screen. Anything about the relationship stays unpublished."

Mina first read out the camera's dedicated end of recording hash. Three lines appeared: the last frame number on the internal memory, the total byte count, and the SHA-256 value. The ceiling relay wasn't recompressing the footage. It was copying those bytes in sequence.

"78 percent is the bit replication rate, not playback time. After it hits 100, all three values have to match before we seal it as the original. If even one differs, the copy fails."

"What about my face?"

"Sealed. We'll ask separately about disclosure scope later."

"Then I agree."

Dojin put his hand on the execute panel.

Sera watched people's movements. Three blue numbered tags on the right side of the north door were moving at the same time. Savior roles were converging to protect the camera on the man's behalf. If she corrected now, the new role could reflux onto the three of them.

"Stop."

Dojin's hand left the screen instantly. The text reverted to gray right before execution. He didn't ask why or insist he could handle it. He raised both empty hands to show Sera.

"Stop confirmed."

Mina almost swung the camera toward that moment automatically. Short, sellable footage. The instant Sera saw Dojin's hand and made him halt his ability. Cut the frame right and it became a romance trailer.

Instead of filming, she marked the three blue tags on the map.

"Three approaching from the northeast. 7 seconds."

"Taeho, block the sightline with the mats."

Taeho set up two shock absorbing mats as a makeshift wall. "Change of delivery address. Make the camera invisible, people visible."

Unable to see the evidence, the three saviors slowed down. Sera grabbed the PA system.

"North door civilian rescue in progress. No one is assigned a hero role. Move to passage two. Do not run."

Mina checked the switch cycle. "Extended to 5.8 seconds. Rumor input has dropped."

"Dojin, again."

He read the text from the beginning. He didn't shorten it, and he didn't skip it just because the man had agreed before. The man heard again the explanation that he could let go of the camera, the order that his body moved first, and the condition that footage disclosure required separate consent.

"I agree."

"Execute." Sera said.

The correction text lit up. The man's fingers loosened. The camera fell onto the mat, and Taeho kicked the body of it further inside the door. Sera grabbed the man's belt and pulled him toward the manual passage. Unable to use her right arm, her body tilted to one side, but she didn't let go of the command baton.

"Left foot. Now right. Don't look at the door."

Taeho lost one support. "One left. Twelve seconds."

Mina watched the ceiling relay's replication rate. 91 percent. 94. 96.

Sera shoved the man out past the passage. "Person clear."

"Original at 98."

The fire shutter came down. The camera body was still inside. Dojin didn't reach for it. In the order Sera had set, civilians came before equipment, and right now this was Taeho's physical stop line.

Taeho pulled the last support and shouted. "Fall back. Equipment delivery deadline missed."

"Relay at 100. Hash secured." Mina answered.

The shutter closed, crushing the camera body. The sound of the lens shattering echoed through the gym. On the relay screen, the three values read earlier from the body and the three values of the copy displayed side by side. Last frame number matched. Byte count matched. Hash matched.

Mina switched the copy to read only and sealed her own access log along with it. Now if anyone cut the footage, they could compare which frames had been removed. The civilian let go, gave his wrist to Eunha, and walked out on his own.

"I'll ask about disclosure scope again." Mina held out the terminal to the man. "Rescue order and role switches, disclosed to the audit team. Face and name, sealed. Relationship questions, not collected. Choose: consent, revise, or refuse."

With his swollen wrist, the man tapped "revise." "Include the part where I couldn't let go of the camera. Don't write it up as me holding on because I was a hero. Write that the number tag wouldn't let my hand let go."

"Logging that sentence exactly as you said it."

Mina posted only the original hash, the rescue timestamp, and the disclosed consent scope to her own channel, not the video. The view count graph was dismal. But the original comparison window lit up green. She'd left behind one more record people could trust, instead of becoming someone people found entertaining.

A small win. A person survived and the original survived. In exchange, one camera, two of Taeho's supports, and the pain spreading across Sera's face were left on the bill.

Dojin asked Sera. "Right arm pain?"

"Seven. Operation continues."

"You're past your checkup time."

"I know."

"I'm not taking command. I'll just ask Eunha whether a handoff is possible."

Sera looked at him for a moment. Instead of praise, she handed over the next authority. "Ask her. Eunha gives the answer."

Mina put that exchange into the original record but attached no relationship tag. Collaboration. Stop signal observed. Medical handoff. Three words were enough.

The civilian from the north door walked into the treatment zone on his own feet. That walk became the outcome before the scoreboard's role score did.

That was when the broadcast terminal she'd left off turned itself on.

The Coordination Bureau's official account reposted a new clip. It stitched together only the moment Dojin raised his hand and looked at Sera, the moment Sera said "Stop," and the moment after the shutter closed when the two of them checked on each other. The civilian rescue, the original hash, Taeho's mats, Mina's warnings, all cut out.

Secret lovers who only see each other, even in the middle of a crisis.

Mina overlaid the frames of the original against the edited version. An approval mark at the bottom of the post caught her eye. It resembled the three pronged mark on one side of Hyunju's objection stamp. The same mark faintly remained on the gym wall's old disaster policy notice board. Beyond that, she couldn't say more.

"One more sample for the record." Mina said. This time she didn't smile. "The official account beat us to it."

Sera looked not at the lens, but at Dojin's hand.

"Stop."

Dojin took his hand off the terminal immediately.

This time, it wasn't an ability that failed to stop. It was the official account.
