Someone Came to the Rescue

Oh Hyeonju was not someone who had come to save Dojin.

She read the waiver in front of Dojin without crumpling it, exactly three times.

Then she cast a vote against its most expensive clause.

The cost of that stamp was one round of her own performance review.

The number above the automated approval window ticked down from 08:59 to 08:58.

The Coordination Bureau's temporary audit room was a place where machines rushed to conclusions faster than people. On the wall terminal, the phrase "expedited waiver for the protection of involved parties" was displayed. On the center table sat two documents, one bearing Sera's name, one bearing Dojin's. Outside the glass wall, reporters alternated between signs reading traitor and savior. Inside, the acrylic chairs were lined up in a single row, arranged in a way that made it awkward to voice dissent.

Hyeonju pulled one chair loose and set it across the table.

Audit division chief Choi Munsik smiled. "Auditor Oh, there's no need to arrange your seat like that. We're all on the same side here."

"Then please submit a definition of that side first."

"The side where both of them live."

Hyeonju turned to the first page of the waiver. Yun Sera's rescue decision is classified as an individual deviation. Baek Dojin's unauthorized entry is closed out as a contract violation. The Coordination Bureau bears no involvement in the emergence of the role or its outside distribution. Three sentences, each pushing a person out from under the institution's roof.

Dojin stood across from Hyeonju. Contract workers under wage garnishment weren't provided chairs. He was writing down an eight digit approval number.

"Can I confirm one thing?"

"Not yet." Hyeonju cut him off. "If I answer your question, this document starts to look like your personal defense. Right now we're looking at victims' rights first."

Dojin stopped his pen. "Understood."

Chief Choi slid the second page forward. "Team lead Sera avoids disciplinary action in exchange for admitting to a command deviation, and Mr. Baek Dojin's case ends with a training requirement instead of contract termination. Both of them can go back into the field."

"What about the promotion review?"

"Handled separately."

"What about the wage garnishment?"

"Settled separately."

"What about the access restrictions and mandatory testimony obligations for the twelve witnesses?"

"That's separate damage."

Hyeonju wrote all three "separately"s in the margin of the document, exactly as spoken. In a document claiming to save both of them, the only thing actually being saved was the case number.

The automated approval countdown passed 07:40.

Chief Choi lowered his voice. "If you object, the shelter lockdown release gets delayed. And the name of whoever's responsible for the delay goes on record. Your regular evaluation is this week, isn't it, Auditor Oh?"

"Yes."

"Is there a reason to hold up your evaluation by objecting to a document that saves people's lives?"

"I'll record that sentence."

Hyeonju stopped on the third page. The font was smaller than the pages before it. Scope of waiver effect. The involved parties and rescued passengers comprehensively withdraw their right to raise objections regarding present and future role assignment, compelled testimony, medical costs, and career loss.

The clause erasing victims' rights was buried at the very back, and its heading was protection of involved parties.

"Chief Choi."

"Yes."

"You said both of them live."

"That's right."

"Does 'both' include the twelve passengers?"

Chief Choi's answer came half a beat late. "For a comprehensive resolution, some rights need to be settled."

"You called deletion settlement. Those aren't the same requirement."

Hyeonju turned the third page toward Sera. Sera was on the hospital video call screen. Her right arm was still immobilized, and she used her left hand to zoom in on the page.

"Giving up medical costs too?"

"It covers current injuries as well as any lasting aftereffects."

"Objection."

The moment Sera finished speaking, a red mark appeared in the field operations column at the bottom of the screen.

Chief Choi raised a hand. "We're not at the team vote stage yet."

"That's exactly the problem," Hyeonju said. "This is a broad closure that erases the rights of twelve passengers, the field commander, and the contract coordinator, and it hasn't gone through a vote across field, legal, and analysis roles. There's no record of dissenting opinions either."

"Administrative waiver isn't a broad correction."

"We classify by effect, not by title."

Hyeonju pressed the bottom right corner of the automated approval terminal three times. The small window that normally verified employee ID numbers switched into audit preservation mode.

Dojin looked at Hyeonju. "If I cover the delay cost, "

"You can't."

"I hadn't finished."

"I've already heard that sentence twice, you offering to prepay someone else's decision cost with your own wages. A third time and it becomes precedent."

Chief Choi gave a short laugh. Hyeonju didn't. What was left after the dry joke was Dojin's habit, and her own evaluation sheet.

Just then, a security terminal on one side of the table rang.

Jang Mina's face appeared on the small screen. Behind her, three dashboards flipped past quickly.

"One sample to add. No, wait, to delete. The Coordination Bureau's official account cache is losing about sixty entries a minute right now. I'm not leaking the original. Just give me a preservation order first so I can pull it out."

Chief Choi tried to block the screen. "External analysts don't have access privileges to the audit room."

"Then the log will show who sent the access link," Mina said, smiling. "Link issued by Choi Munsik. This isn't a meme, this is the original."

Hyeonju checked the numbers first. The first four digits of the deletion task's approval number matched the wage garnishment order. The last four were blacked out. Matching series alone wasn't enough to identify the approver.

"Ms. Jang Mina. No inference, just what's visible right now."

Mina's smile disappeared. "Deletion of the official account cache is in progress. Partial match on approval number. Logs from forty minutes before and after the original video's posting time are the deletion target. No preservation authority currently exists."

"Good. Can you sign your name to that statement?"

"Under my real name?"

"Without a real name it can't be used as evidence for a preservation request."

Mina glanced once at the window showing her channel's subscriber count. Handing over this log would put her own unofficial access route under investigation too.

"Jang Mina. Data analysis. In favor."

A blue mark appeared in the analysis role column.

Sera spoke. "Yun Sera. Field. In favor. With the condition that the patient's face and the independent testimony original be sealed separately."

Next to the red dissent mark in the field role column, a separate mark of approval for preservation appeared. There was no reason for one person to cast the same vote on every issue.

Hyeonju held her own vote for last. First she pulled up the third page of the waiver on screen and highlighted the sentence erasing victims' rights. Then she read out the grounds for her objection.

"The institutional waiver retroactively deletes the involved parties' present and future right to object, and even for its broad effects, it omits role based voting and any recorded dissenting opinions. Since the official account logs are being deleted at the same time, automatic closure is suspended pending preservation of the original."

Chief Choi struck the table. "Do you have evidence that the log deletion and this case are the same directive?"

"No."

"Then why halt the audit?"

"Not to conclude that they're the same, but to preserve the original so we can verify the possibility that they're different."

Hyeonju pressed the real name field.

Oh Hyeonju. Legal and consent audit. Against waiver. In favor of log preservation.

The screen turned red.

Motion to suspend accepted.

The individual case closure is being converted into a special audit at the Team 7 level.

Filer Oh Hyeonju's regular personnel evaluation is held pending until responsibility for the audit delay is determined.

The status of the fire door on the hospital connection screen also changed. The shelter lockdown remained in place, but the automatic transmission of the "traitor entry banned" list was halted, and manual transfer authority was opened up for medical staff. The roles assigned to the twelve passengers didn't disappear. But at least they could stop being locked outside the treatment room because of a number tag.

A faster cost was stamped onto Hyeonju's employee badge.

Automatic closure approval authority suspended. Until the special audit concludes, all approvals require joint sign off from a superior.

One dissenting vote had made her next dissenting vote slower still. Hyeonju filed that notice into the objection record as well.

The automated approval countdown froze at 03:11. At the same time, on Mina's screen, the deletion count kept climbing.

"The preservation order still hasn't reached the account server."

"Route?" Hyeonju asked.

"From the automated window to records management, from records management to the account server. Normally thirty seconds. Right now, estimated two minutes."

"Can you replicate the local cache without altering the original in that window?"

"They'll attack my unofficial access as evidence contamination."

"That's why I'm asking. Can you keep a read only hash and an access log together, without changing the original?"

Mina set her fingers on the keyboard. This time there was no joke. "I can do it. But my channel's operating rights go under audit too."

"That decision is yours to make, Ms. Jang Mina."

"I'll do it. I'm not leaking the original."

Mina started the replication. On screen, the deletion and replication counts raced side by side. 428 to 17. 431 to 42. 439 to 88.

Dojin set the original garnishment order down in front of Hyeonju. "Give me the list of materials you need me to cooperate with."

Hyeonju printed out two separate notices.

"First, you have an obligation to cooperate with material submission and appearance during the audit. You must not delete the draft correction wording, the cost notices, or your personal device logs."

Dojin took it. "Confirmed."

Hyeonju held out the second page as well.

"Second, you have no obligation to stay silent. Even if the Coordination Bureau demands a private settlement, don't stop informing the parties involved of the facts and the risks. Though you're not to disclose anyone else's medical or testimony information without their consent."

"Are you defending me?"

"No. I'm making sure you can't hide behind cooperation as an excuse to shut yourself off alone again."

Dojin filed the two notices separately, without letting them overlap. "Can I request a rebuttal?"

"Do it in person. If you hide behind paperwork, I won't respond."

Mina's screen flickered black. Replication at 311. Deletion complete at 447.

"Missed some of it."

The preservation order reached the account server. The deletion task stopped, but twenty seven cache entries from just before the original posting time were already empty. The approval number on the final deletion command belonged to the same series as the garnishment order's approval number. The identity field was corrupted and unreadable.

Chief Choi spoke. "In the end you couldn't even protect the evidence. And you staked your evaluation on it."

Hyeonju bundled her own evaluation suspension notice together with the remaining cache hashes into a single file and sealed it.

"I didn't help. I stopped it."

Beneath the sealing timestamp, the deletion timestamp was exactly one second earlier.
