The Person Counted as an Item

There were four people.
There were four employee badges.
There were five chairs.
Baek Dowon's radio was in his hand, but it wasn't on the list.
At 2:39:58, Yuna started by counting the objects on the break room table. Mijin's employee badge, Seoha's radio, Dowon's rubber mallet, her own keyboard. Four items. She didn't look at faces. Ever since a voice identical to Nam Sangho's had called out Seoha's name earlier, names and faces on a screen weren't the first thing to trust anymore.
On one side of the table sat five blue mugs and five chairs. The fifth seat had been left over since Chapter 4. No one was sitting in it, but the fabric of the backrest was pressed down. Yuna didn't push the chair away. She had no idea what would actually change if she attacked an empty seat.
The second hand on the wall clock passed 2:40.
The center's inventory window refreshed.
`Night shift work items: 3`
Dowon held up the radio in his hand. "Is this some kind of toy."
The voice was Dowon's own. His thumbprint oil stain was still on the handle, and the left side of the battery cover was cracked from a drop last month. But Yuna felt like she was seeing it for the first time. She knew the model and how to use it, but somewhere in her head there was a blank space for who had been using it.
She didn't turn that feeling into a judgment about a person.
"Put items in the middle, please. I'm not checking faces, I'm checking handoffs."
Dowon didn't set the radio down. "It's in my hand."
"That's exactly why we need it. Who gave it to you, and what happens next."
Mijin looked at the fifth chair. "The chairs were always five, right?"
Seoha couldn't answer right away either. Everyone's memory matched. But in front of the fifth chair there was no badge, no radio, no tool, no keyboard. Just one extra mug. No one could say who had drunk from it, who had washed it, or which shift it belonged to.
Yuna pushed her own keyboard onto the small folding desk outside the table. The cable pulled taut and the tower shifted half a hand's width. Under the keyboard were cracker crumbs and a worn spot on the right space bar.
"Mijin gave me this on my first day. She said the number 7 key double presses, and the next step is entering the raw log."
Mijin nodded. "I gave it to her. Never filed a request to replace key 7. Company benefits move slower than fear does."
The joke was short. Mijin didn't pull the keyboard back toward herself. She left the fourth seat's boundary exactly as Yuna had set it.
Seoha set down her own radio. "Yuna handed this to me before I went out on a call, battery at 61 percent. Next step is two confirmation tones at the entrance."
Yuna remembered that. The same sentence was in the record from Chapter 7.
Mijin set down the badge. "Employee number 2047. Seoha pressed the corner of the candidate screen with this. Next step is checking who's still in the center."
Dowon set down the rubber mallet. Black tape was wound twice around the base of the handle. "My toolbox. If valve 3 freezes, hit the bottom twice. Next step is checking the pump station door."
Each of the four items had, besides an owner, a handoff and a next action that someone else remembered. In front of the fifth chair, there was nothing.
Yuna didn't write "4 people" in the headcount column.
She wrote "Confirmed handoff seats: 4."
She didn't write "fake" for the fifth seat either. She wrote "no handoff item." The pressed-down mark on the backrest remained, but it hadn't earned a coworker's seat in the team's judgment.
Yuna also tested whether placing a single item would create a seat. Mijin took out a spare card reader without opening the supply bag. The seal sticker and purchase barcode were untouched, no trace of anyone's use. Using tongs, Yuna placed the reader in front of the fifth chair from outside the yellow square, and made sure no one spoke a handoff phrase.
The chair cushion sank down another finger's width. The card reader's power light turned on by itself. But the center's inventory didn't move from 3. On the screen, "No owner, no handoff" flashed once and disappeared.
When Mijin tried to retrieve the reader, Yuna held up her palm. If Mijin picked it up herself, that action could become the first handoff. The two of them gripped the edge of the bag together and pushed it back into the original supply slot, checking the barcode before and after the test. The mere presence of an object or a pressed-down chair wasn't enough to make a coworker's seat. What was needed, at least for now, was a usage trace that someone else remembered, a proper handoff, and a next action.
The center's inventory was still 3.
Dowon threw the radio onto the middle of the table. The battery indicator dropped from four bars to three. "This is the only thing missing."
At that moment, Dowon's voice came out of the radio's speaker.
"It's in my hand."
It repeated what he had just said, at the same pitch. The real Dowon had his mouth shut.
The sound was louder from the cabinet at the back of the break room than from the radio on the table. A closed metal cabinet, where they kept cleaning gloves and spare cables. Yuna didn't look at the cabinet handle first. She checked between Dowon's actual hand and the object on the table.
Dowon was holding the radio again. No one could say when he'd picked it up.
"When did you grab it?" Yuna asked.
"Just now."
"Who saw it?"
No one could answer.
Instead of a smile, Yuna gave her keyboard cable one tug. She confirmed her own seat still held outside the folding desk. "Don't open the cabinet. Just ask questions. The real technician gets the same questions."
Seoha asked Dowon, "First phrase when you take a call."
"3184, on site. Receiving."
The voice inside the cabinet answered immediately too. "3184, on site. Receiving."
"Next action after handoff."
Dowon pressed the side button once and released it, then pressed a second time, longer. The first confirmation tone was short, the second had static mixed in. "One short, one long. If they return it twice, move."
The voice inside the cabinet said, "One short, one long. If they return it twice, move."
Even the exact phrasing matched.
"Try it." Dowon spoke toward the cabinet.
Two confirmation tones sounded from inside. Both the same length. There was no small contact noise, the kind that happens when you release the button between the first and second press. It was two finished sound clips stitched together.
The real Dowon pressed again. Short, release noise, long. Yuna watched the order in which Dowon's thumb lifted off the button, more than the waveform of the sound.
"The phrasing matches. The order of actions doesn't."
Mijin took a step toward the cabinet. "Then that one is..."
Yuna cut in, but not to shut her down. "Not confirming real or fake. Just a failed handoff."
Mijin stopped. She didn't lock the cabinet first to protect anyone. She asked Yuna, "What's the next check?"
It was a question that handed over the choice.
Yuna pointed at the battery on Dowon's radio. Three bars had dropped to two. No calls had gone out, but it was draining fast. Inside the cabinet, a full charge notification sounded.
"Restore the list first. Don't carry the item for him, do a proper handoff."
Dowon held the radio out to Mijin. Mijin didn't take it. "If I hold it, I might not be protecting Dowon's seat. I might be taking it away."
"Then who takes it."
Seoha held out her hand. "I was his partner on the last call. Hand it to me."
Dowon didn't let go right away. He showed the radio's screen to Seoha. "Unit 3184. Battery 19 percent. Left cover damaged. Currently receiving normally."
Seoha didn't just repeat the same words back. She checked the screen and the cover herself. "4721 receiving. Battery 19 percent, left damage confirmed. Next is returning the confirmation tone."
Dowon pressed once short, once long.
Seoha returned it once short, once long.
Yuna caught the exact moment both their hands left the radio at the same time on the offline clock. 02:47:22. In the log, she wrote separately: Dowon's release, Seoha's receipt, the battery and damage condition, and the next action.
The center's inventory window flickered.
`Night shift work items: 4`
Two lines of ownership appeared under the radio entry. "3184: released." "4721: temporarily held." What remained wasn't a record of an item seized to protect a person, but a proper handoff.
The full charge sound inside the cabinet cut off. The door was still closed.
Dowon looked down at his empty hand. "I haven't disappeared, though."
Yuna didn't answer by looking at his face. She pointed, in order, to Dowon's rubber mallet, the radio now with Seoha, and the record of 3184's release. "Two handoffs currently confirmed. Your judgment is still inside this team."
"You didn't say I'm a person."
"Because even looking at a face can get that wrong."
Dowon didn't smile, but he pulled the rubber mallet back toward himself. It was a seat with a usage trace and a next action.
Mijin didn't remove the fifth chair. She just made a square with yellow tape on the floor in front of it. "No one sits here until a handoff item shows up. Yuna, is this enough?"
"I don't have the right answer."
"That's why I'm asking."
Mijin didn't make coffee for her instead. She didn't push Yuna's cold canned coffee next to the keyboard either. She didn't turn protection into doing things on someone else's behalf.
Yuna didn't pull her keyboard back from the folding desk. Keeping the fourth seat's boundary clear was the only way to avoid counting the fifth empty seat. The keyboard cable was taut enough to strain her wrist, but she logged that discomfort in the cost column.
Seoha spotted a new line under the inventory.
Beneath the restored radio entry, the pump station ticket had come back. The first of the three tickets that had briefly been deleted. An unfamiliar unit and room number had been added after the address.
`Northwest Pressure Pump Station No. 4 / Hanbit Apartments, Building 103, Unit 1204`
A citizen's residence had been attached to a public facility address.
The fragment of "Seo" in the handler column hadn't disappeared.
While Yuna was reading the new address, Dowon pressed his pocket once, as if searching for a radio that wasn't in his hand.
That's when his voice came from the cabinet again.
"3184, on site. Receiving."
This time the real Dowon hadn't said anything, and it was Mijin who turned her head first.
Instead of faces, Yuna counted the objects on the table again.
One badge. One radio. One rubber mallet. One keyboard.
Four seats.
Under the fifth chair sat a radio she'd never seen before, its display showing a full charge.
