The entrance to the archive had gone cold. Cha Yeonho slowly rubbed his left thumb. A grinding sound of bone shifting out of place lingered in his ears. The seal, painted in deep crimson to preserve the dignity of Sect Leader Jin Mugyeol, looked untouched, but when he ran a fingernail along its edge, hardened wax crumbled away weakly. It was the mark of a seal removed and reattached. When Cha Yeonho pulled at the tendons of his left hand to check the gap, a sharp pain shot up his ulna and into his skull. It was the price of forcing strength he no longer had. Feeling the numbness spreading through his left hand, he took a brush from his pocket and scraped along the seam of the doorframe. White powder fell to the floor.

"That's enough."

A low voice came from behind him. Cha Yeonho turned his stiff body slowly. Baek Miryeong was walking out of the dark corridor, a case of needles in her hand. She lifted her lantern and studied the faint beads of sweat on his left hand with a sharp gaze.

"If you force the seal open, the Settlement Hall elders will expel you on the spot. Damaging the archive seal is treason against the very foundation of the sect. Is that really the ending you want?"

Cha Yeonho pointed at the gap where the seal had been peeled away and spoke anyway.

"Look at this gap. It wasn't made by a key. It was scraped out with the edge of a blade. The seal meant to secure the inside has already been tampered with. Someone touched the ledgers last night."

Baek Miryeong tucked the case of needles under her arm and stepped toward the archive's doorframe. She ran her fingers along the dust on the frame, then took out a medical record book from inside her robe.

"To see the records, you need the sect leader's permission. But your left hand won't hold out long enough anyway. The backlash you took at today's settlement ceremony is still numbing your nerves."

"Treatment can wait. I need to check Junior Sister An Sobin's injury records before they disappear."

"There's nothing more foolish than a patient refusing his own treatment. If you collapse, who's going to prove the truth?"

Baek Miryeong seized Cha Yeonho's left wrist and dragged him to her clinic. Once inside, she pressed his hand down and pinned it to the bed. She brought the lantern closer and roughly unwound his bandage. Beneath it, the swollen joint had turned an angry, festering red.

"Cha Yeonho, your breathing readings are a mess right now. The heel pivot shifted when you took the backlash. If the bone doesn't settle back into place, you won't even be able to hold a sword in three days. Listen to me."

"I need to see the records. Master won't hand over the key. We need to find the evidence before that."

"Don't change the subject. Here, compare the medicine withdrawal slips of the past settlement ceremony's victims against the treatment logs."

The ledger Baek Miryeong opened was full of lines struck in red ink. Cha Yeonho scanned the dates through the pain. An Sobin's injury from the settlement ceremony was reported three days ago. But the pain relief medicine and the blood-stopping herbs had been withdrawn from the archive a full week before that. Cha Yeonho's eyes shook.

"How is this possible? Someone ordered the medicine before the accident even happened."

"It means this wasn't an accidental injury. It was a controlled accident from the start. The settlement ceremony was only the procedure to confirm the damage. The accident itself had already been planned."

Cha Yeonho gripped the corner of the ledger, holding back the tremor in his left hand. The bandage on his fingertips soaked red, but he didn't feel the pain. Jin Mugyeol, and the Settlement Hall elders, had known these dates and chosen to seal them away anyway.

"I need the original ledger from the archive. I need proof of why the dates on the treatment log were changed, and who requested this medicine."

"To get that, you'll have to meet Sect Leader Jin Mugyeol. But you know this already, don't you? He will never allow evidence that eats away at Hoeryumun's honor."

"Then I won't touch the honor. I'll hold the right to teach accountable instead."

Cha Yeonho rose to his feet. Pain made his legs sway, but he braced himself against the wall. Leaving the clinic for the library, he lost feeling in his left foot with every step. The library's heavy door was shut fast. Jin Mugyeol sat not in the seat of honor but in the chair beside it, lit only by a single lantern. He smoothed his sleeve and received Cha Yeonho.

"Senior Disciple Cha, the night is deep. What brings you to me again?"

"The archive seal has been damaged. The medicine withdrawal records don't match the accident date. An internal investigation is needed."

Jin Mugyeol set down his teacup and smoothed the end of his sleeve. His movements showed no hesitation, but the sound of the cup touching the table cut coldly through the room.

"The seal is under my care. It was closed for the sake of the sect's order, not to hide anything. Leave."

"Order that costs a junior brother his arm isn't sect code, it's a crime. Three days. Give me three days to examine the archive. Under the authority of the senior disciple's seat, I will verify the ledger of responsibility."

"Can you bear those three days? Your left hand is already spilling backlash. You still don't understand what a senior brother's death means."

Cha Yeonho picked up the brush that had fallen to the floor and drew a sharp line across the document. He did not look away from Jin Mugyeol's eyes.

"I will correct the records hidden behind a senior brother's death. This isn't a matter of honor. It's a record of survival, for the next generation of Hoeryumun to live. Grant me the right to audit."

Jin Mugyeol fell silent. He glanced sideways at the chest in the corner of the library. Inside it, locked away, was the key that could open the archive. Instead of the key, Jin Mugyeol picked up the brush and wrote something on the document.

"I cannot hand over the full authority of the senior disciple's seat. But I will permit you to examine the medicine withdrawal slips alone. Three days. If you fail to uncover the truth within that time, you will give up not only your position as senior disciple, but every authority you hold in Hoeryumun."

"I will bear it."

Cha Yeonho took the stamped document into his hands. His fingers were numb and the paper slipped, but he pressed it against his chest. Leaving the library, Jin Mugyeol watched his retreating back and slid his hand deep into his sleeve, gripping the key. Once the study door closed, Cha Yeonho ran straight for the clinic. An Sobin's groans came out of the dark. Inside the room, Baek Miryeong held An Sobin's right arm still with a cold expression.

"Senior Disciple, did you get the sect leader's permission?"

An Sobin asked, her face pale. The tips of her fingers had already turned black. Cha Yeonho knelt beside her and rewrapped her blood-soaked bandage.

"I got it. Three days is enough. Sobin, I'm going to bring out the truth."

"Actually... the settlement ceremony wasn't the first time. My fingertips have been stiffening for months now. But watching Senior Disciple train so hard, I couldn't bring myself to say anything."

An Sobin's confession struck straight through Cha Yeonho's heart. The settlement ceremony wasn't an accident. It was the moment the structural contradiction that had been eating away at Hoeryumun finally surfaced. Cha Yeonho looked at Baek Miryeong. She closed the ledger and nodded without a word.

"Do you understand now, Cha Yeonho? What you were trying to stop wasn't the accident that day. It's the tower of lies Hoeryumun has built over decades. An Sobin's pain is the proof."

Cha Yeonho gripped An Sobin's hand tighter. Blood from his left hand seeped into her bandage. Within the three days Jin Mugyeol had given him, he had to expose every rotten corner of Hoeryumun and build a new order in its place. He drew the stamped permit from inside his robe. Tomorrow morning, he would open the archive door. And he would bring every number hidden in the ledger before judgment.

The night wind shook the window and blew out the lantern. In the dark, Cha Yeonho clenched his left hand tight. He heard the sound of bone shifting out of place, but he stood through the pain. Whatever Do Gyeom had discussed with the Settlement Hall elders today would close around his throat by tomorrow morning. Leaving the clinic, Cha Yeonho glanced back at the firmly shut door. When this door opened again in three days, everything had to be different. He walked into the darkness, holding the record, ready to change Hoeryumun's fate.

Dawn light was faintly rising at the end of the corridor. It wasn't salvation. It was the start of another battlefield. Cha Yeonho's shadow stretched long, reaching toward the library. In three days, Hoeryumun's sect code would be rewritten from the ground up. That was the reason he had returned, and the only path he had chosen tonight. He gripped the door handle firmly and waited for the coming morning.

He pressed down on the back of his hand so he wouldn't forget the pain in his left arm. His bones screamed, but he did not stop. The road to the archive would be harsh, and Do Gyeom would already be ready to stand in his way. But now he carried in his robe a permit stamped with the sect leader's seal. He would no longer hide or run like a coward. He pushed through the darkness toward the library. The three day war was just beginning. Cha Yeonho gripped the worn handle in front of the library door. The cold touch of the metal reached his left hand. He was ready to open the door. Whatever waited beyond it, there was no longer any room to retreat. The cold morning air brushed his cheek. He would never stop. Until the moment his left hand went completely numb, he would keep recording, and recording again.

The deeper the night grew, the longer his shadow stretched across the corridor. This was the beginning of the three days. Cha Yeonho's eyes held nothing but the record and the responsibility ahead. Tomorrow morning, he would face Do Gyeom. He sensed a storm fiercer than today's was coming. But he wasn't afraid. Nothing was more frightening than the death he had already lived through once. He glanced sideways at the key left alone at the end of the corridor, and with unwavering steps, sank into the darkness of the record room. Even without picking up the key, his fingers were already ready to open the door.

Just before dawn, Cha Yeonho clenched his left hand once more. The pain remained, but at its edge, the sect's order was finally being rearranged. Cha Yeonho did not stop. As long as the record kept going, he would never fall. At the end of these three days, what waited should not be the sect's ruin, but the responsibility and authority finally moving back into their rightful hands. He steadied his breath once more. The pain in his left hand began to fall into rhythm with his heartbeat. It was the only proof that he was alive, and that he was changing something. Cold air pushed through the gap in the library's heavy door. He lifted the permit and checked the seal Jin Mugyeol had left on it. The red mark of the seal shone clear in the faint dawn light. Now it was evidence. He curled and uncurled his fingers, over and over, so as not to lose feeling in his left hand.
