We Weren't Secret Lovers

Yun Sera was not Baek Dojin's secret lover.

But thanks to that rumor, the ceiling was collapsing everywhere except above Sera. Every time rebar and concrete cracked over her head, an invisible hand pushed the debris aside, carving out a gap like a flower path laid out for a lover. The problem was that the flower path ended at a severed platform. Dojin said he could save her, then asked for permission first.

"Yun Sera. Listen to everything I'm about to read, then decide."

"Thirty seconds."

"That's enough."

"If this is bluster, I'm killing you after the rescue."

Guryong Station on the Gangnam Circular Line was half caved in during rush hour. Two train cars had folded and jammed into the tunnel wall, and a cracked billboard silently looped the same footage. Sera trapped in the wreckage, Dojin outside the safety line. Whoever had captioned it made the point clear.

An unqualified contract worker rushed in to save his secret lover.

Every time someone read that sentence aloud, the rumor took hold and shook the station. Sera became the lover, protected. Dojin became the hero who had to save her. The roles fit well enough. That was exactly what made them dangerous. A hero has no retreat, and a protected lover has no command authority.

Sera cut in over the radio.

"Pillar two is tilting west. Three civilians, eight meters behind me. Get them out first."

The loudspeaker at the temporary command post drowned her out immediately.

"Mr. Baek Dojin, sign the hero waiver immediately! Signing grants temporary entry authorization!"

A red button flashed on the transparent terminal. Accept hero role. The Disaster Coordination Agency official's face said all he had to do was press it. Dojin read the fine print beside the button first.

Command authority over the rescue is delegated to the hero, superseding the person the role belongs to.

"Return it."

Ma Taeho slid past the safety line with a waterproof bag on his back. Anchor pins, cutters, and cable came out of it one after another.

"Twelve rescue pins, two tow cables, one life each. But if you load command authority on top of that too, the axle snaps. That's not a delivery, that's dumping."

"I know."

"Then why is a guy who knows standing in front of the button?"

"I'm drafting a different clause."

Taeho glanced at Dojin's terminal and grimaced. "In thirty seconds?"

"Twenty two seconds," Sera corrected. "Bill the small talk to your own insurance."

Before she'd even finished, pillar two came down. Sera shoved a broken sign with her shoulder to shield the civilians. The ceiling still dodged her, with uncanny precision. Instead it dumped debris on the people she was protecting. The rumor had promised to keep the lover alive, not to obey the field commander's orders.

Dojin closed the hero waiver. He condensed the new clause into three lines. His fingers were shaking, but he didn't cut down on the questions.

"Let's confirm this first. One, Yun Sera remains the field commander, not a rescue target. Two, Baek Dojin only opens the entry route Sera designates. Three, this correction is valid only until the people trapped right now have a secured way out. Understood?"

"Amend two. If the route I designate is blocked, it can be changed once, by Taeho's judgment."

Taeho's eyes went wide. "My vote gets loaded on too?"

"If you don't want it, step out."

He looked back and forth between the leaning pillar and the pins he had left. He answered without any joke in his voice.

"Once only. If it goes over six pins, I stop."

Dojin revised the clause. Then he read the last line out loud.

"There's a cost too. Whatever force the correction removes gets deducted from one of three things: my money, my correction officer license, or a memory of using my ability. I don't know how much this one will run."

"What about my cost?"

Dojin didn't rush his answer. If he called something safe that he couldn't guarantee, from that moment it stopped being an explanation and became a lure.

"The correction itself won't take anything from you. But if the agency turns the rumor into a question of command fairness, it could hurt your personnel record. I can't promise I can stop that."

A piece of metal pinged against the radio on the other end. Sera drew a short breath.

"What about withdrawal?"

"Before signing, now. After it's in effect, it ends automatically once the escape route is secured. Withdrawing partway through could close the passage, so the three of us have to agree together to stop it."

"Include that condition. Sera, do you agree?"

There was no answer from beyond the wreckage. Sera wasn't even counting the seconds. To Dojin, that silence was the longest of all. The old habit of paying the cost himself first whenever things got urgent tugged at his wrist. The hero button was still sitting at the bottom of the screen. Pressing it would get him in right away.

"Baek Dojin."

"I'm listening."

"I heard about your cost too. I keep my command authority. Taeho gets one change. Once the escape route is secured, your correction authority ends too. I agree, on those terms."

Only then did Dojin sign.

The rumor station went quiet for one beat.

On the billboard, the caption's "secret lover" bled and ran. The black strokes flowed like ink soaked in water and re-formed into "field commander." At that moment, the rebar that had been bending away from Sera stopped. The protective flower path vanished. Instead, a gap opened in the west wall she'd pointed to, just wide enough for one person to pass through.

"Go in."

At Sera's word, Dojin threw himself through.

The first gap was narrower than his shoulders. Taeho hooked the cable, and Dojin pushed the cutter through. Metal dust bit into his cheek. On the other side, Sera kicked the sign away and forced the three civilians flat to the ground.

"Heads down. Eight steps. Don't run."

A child grabbed at Sera's hem, crying. A bolt popped loose somewhere above. Dojin reached to pull the child through first, then stopped. The order Sera had pointed out was the elderly man, then the child, then the office worker with the injured leg. The rescue that looked good to him and the rescue the scene actually needed were not the same thing.

"Keep the order," Dojin said. "Taeho, check the tension."

"Eighty. Four pins. Still deliverable."

The old man came through the gap. The child followed. The moment the third one, the office worker's leg, caught on something, the ceiling groaned again. Taeho looked down at the cable.

"West can't hold. Using my change. Reroute to the south ventilation shaft."

Dojin ran the numbers. South meant moving farther from Sera. Under the original clause, that route would have been forbidden. But it was the one authority Sera had handed over.

"Change confirmed. South."

He released the cable and the west gap closed. Screams broke out at the command post, and the Disaster Coordination Agency official shouted through the loudspeaker.

"This is an unauthorized change! Revert to the hero waiver!"

"No do overs!" Taeho shouted back, louder.

The cover on the south ventilation shaft lifted. Sera hoisted the injured office worker onto her back and pushed the child through. Dojin caught both of them from inside the shaft. When Sera finally reached her hand out, he asked before taking it.

"Is your right hand okay?"

"Left hand. My right shoulder took a hit."

Dojin gripped her left wrist and pulled her up. The moment she was through, Sera pulled her hand free and looked back.

"Anyone left?"

"Everyone's out."

Only then did Sera drop to one knee. Something like a laugh leaked out between coughs.

"The rescue gets a pass. Your face is fired."

"Firing jokes hit hard when you're a contract worker."

"Then smile next time."

A paramedic came over to lift her right arm. Sera gritted her teeth and stepped back.

"Don't lift it. Check whether it's a bruise or a fracture first."

When Dojin reached to take the splint instead, Sera stopped him with a look. "I'll talk."

"I know. Just handing over the splint."

The paramedic asked Sera again where the pain was before immobilizing the arm. Dojin logged her answer into his terminal without interrupting. Right shoulder impact, command maintained on site, detailed examination needed. Sera checked the final line herself, then pressed save.

Sirens and applause finally broke out together, late. Someone was already live streaming a zoomed in clip of the moment their hands had touched. The caption at the bottom of the screen had already changed.

Not even death could part these secret lovers.

Sera kicked off the rescue blanket. "Tell them to take that line down."

The Disaster Coordination Agency official approached with a thick report binder. He was the same man who'd pushed for the hero waiver earlier. Aware of the cameras, he smiled and opened to the first page.

"Thanks to the dedication of you two, we prevented casualties. If you'll just sign the role confirmation box here..."

Sera snatched the pen. She struck a single line through the box labeled "hero's secret lover."

"I'm Field Commander Yun Sera. I was rescued, that's true. I refuse the lover role. Correct both the footage and the report."

The official's smile thinned. "Public perception has already formed, so an immediate correction is difficult. Given internal procedure first..."

"That's not a procedure. That's passing the buck."

The rescued office worker pushed himself up on the stretcher. "The commander set the order. He didn't do this alone."

The official turned his back to the camera. Dojin added even that gesture to the list of items to preserve as original footage.

Sera wrote the conditions into the blank herself. Rescue command authority retained. No record of personal relationship. Original footage preserved. Then she held the pen out to Dojin.

"Write your own part."

Dojin struck out the "hero" box. Beneath it he wrote that correction costs are not to be passed on to the affected party without their agreement. The moment he finished signing, both terminals rang at once.

Sera checked her own screen first.

Personnel review on hold. Commander Yun Sera's promotion review is frozen until the assessment of command fairness regarding a personal relationship is complete.

A number came up on Dojin's screen.

Agreed correction cost settlement. Full garnishment of three months' contract pay.

Taeho read both notices back and forth. He drew a long breath, then finished it in one word.

"Damaged goods."

The bill arrived later than the punchline, which made it hurt more. Dojin reflexively tried to close just his own notice. Sera blocked his screen with the back of her hand.

"Don't hide it."

"It's my pay."

"It's also a cost that came out of my operation. If you settle it alone, I won't give my consent next time."

Dojin took his hand off the close button. "Understood. Can I leave it as a joint record?"

"Only the pay and the promotion. Leave out the personal relationship."

"Agreed."

The two of them pulled the notices up side by side on one screen. The waiver of liability the official had handed over showed an approval timestamp earlier than the rescue itself. It was stamped before the collapse had even been reported.

Dojin's hand stopped on the last line.

Beside the name of the person who'd approved the pay garnishment was an unfamiliar co-signature.

The name itself had smeared, unreadable. But its presence was unmistakable.

"Whose signature is this?"

The official tried to snatch the binder back. Sera got her hand on top of it first. Her right shoulder trembled, but her hand didn't move.

"Preserve the original."

Dojin looked past the official, at Sera instead. Sera pressed the report, its lover box now struck through, against his chest.

"This is a rescue report."

Then she folded the garnishment notice separately and put it in her own pocket.
