One Helmet on Shelf Twelve

There was a helmet on shelf twelve of the warehouse. It had been in that spot for five years.
Before Gyeongmin took it down, he opened the ledger. On the page from five years ago, in the owner column, was a line that read no recovery target. Below it, in his own handwriting, was one more line.
Looking for the owner.
In five years, those five words were the only trace he had of a search.
1:40 in the afternoon. The trading partner had said he would come at two.
At the clinic, Yura was waiting on registration. The oxygen tank was the third one from the kit Eunchae had supplied.
Gyeongmin knew that. Knowing it, he had to bring something by two.
"Give them this and you get three logs," Gyeongmin said. "I won't hand over Yura's bracelet. I'll give you this instead."
Mirae looked at the helmet. Yesterday he had told her that if there was only one option, it wasn't a choice at all, and Gyeongmin had heard that and gone looking for a second option.
"Then who owns this helmet." Mirae asked.
"That's the problem." Gyeongmin said.
Gyeongmin took the helmet down. There was a number on the forehead pad inside. It had been erased and rewritten, and the first two letters weren't MJ. They were SH.
"I don't know why the first letters are different." he said. "There's KJ, there's MJ. Whether it's a district code or a company code, nobody ever taught me that."
"SH-3120." Mirae wrote it down.
"Running a search on this number turns up nothing. I tried three times back then." Gyeongmin said.
"What if you try again now." Mirae asked.
Gyeongmin paused for a moment. He took out his terminal.
"I've never tried since. Back then it turned up nothing, so I assumed it always would."
The search took fourteen seconds.
A single line appeared on the screen.
SH-3120 / Status: Active / Last response: 3 days ago
Gyeongmin's hand let go of the terminal. It dropped onto the cargo, screen still lit.
"Active." Mirae read the word aloud. "What does active mean."
"It means the equipment is still alive." Gyeongmin said.
"If the equipment is alive." Mirae asked again.
"Someone is using it."
The warehouse went quiet. Even the forklift noise had stopped. Gyeongmin had never sold this helmet in five years, and he himself didn't know exactly why. All he knew was that the nameplate had been overwritten once already.
"Was this person a missing person back then." Mirae asked.
"He wasn't on the missing persons list." Gyeongmin said. "That's why it was no recovery target."
"Then what is he." Mirae asked.
"Not on the list, but the equipment is alive." Gyeongmin said.
Mirae wrote two lines side by side in her notebook. Yura, not on the list, alive. This number, not on the list, equipment responding.
Gyeongmin drew a line between those two rows. His hand stopped twice before he finished drawing it.
"So nobody looked for him in five years." Mirae asked.
"I didn't look." Gyeongmin said. "I wrote in the ledger that I was looking. I thought five words counted as looking."
"Gyeongmin." Mirae said. "You can't trade this helmet."
"I know." Gyeongmin said.
"Then what about the three logs."
"I can't take them."
"Then Dohyeon can't verify anything either." Mirae said. "Without verification, the article can't run. Without an article, no outside verifier will come."
"I know." Gyeongmin said. "But if I hand over this helmet, I erase, with my own hands, a second time, someone who was already dropped from the list five years ago."
"The first time was five years ago."
"The second time is today."
Mirae closed her notebook. It made a sound closing. Gyeongmin knew that sound wasn't an argument against him.
Gyeongmin put the helmet back on the shelf. Shelf twelve, the same spot. Then he wrote one more line in the ledger.
August 14th. Query result on SH-3120: active. Trade cancelled. Oh Gyeongmin.
"Is there a way to get the logs without paying a price." Mirae asked.
"There's one way." Gyeongmin said. "Make my own loss public."
"What do you mean." Mirae asked.
"The exchange has something called a public ledger. A column where sellers post their own trade errors themselves. Nobody uses it."
"Why." Mirae asked.
"Posting drops your rating. A lower rating means the good merchandise stops coming to you." Gyeongmin said.
Gyeongmin picked up the terminal. His finger hovered over the screen for two seconds.
"One from eight years ago, one from last year, and this one." he said. "I'll post all three. What I sold, what got sold under my account, and what I never clicked on."
"Then what happens to your rating."
"It goes to the bottom." Gyeongmin said. "I make my living hauling cargo. A lower rating means half the work. Weight doesn't lie. Ratings do."
"Then why are you doing this." Mirae asked.
"Post it on the public ledger and that trade becomes searchable." Gyeongmin said. "Once it's searchable, other sellers with the same wording post theirs too. That's how this market works. One goes up, three follow."
Mirae checked the logic.
"So this isn't buying the logs. It's making the logs surface on their own."
"Yes." Gyeongmin said.
"Is that certain." Mirae asked.
"No." Gyeongmin said. "They might not follow. Then I'll have lost the rating for nothing."
Gyeongmin posted all three entries. The upload took four minutes, and through all of it he never let go of the cargo strap.
On the first entry he wrote the price from eight years ago. Four hundred ten thousand won. The next field asked for the purpose, and he wrote medical expenses.
"You don't have to write that." Mirae said.
"If I write it, people know why it was sold." Gyeongmin said. "Then the next person can write theirs too. If I don't write it, I'm just the bad one. If I do, this becomes a rescue."
On the second entry he entered last year's intake number. On the third, today's date and KJ-7741.
One field was left. Return plan.
Gyeongmin wrote two lines there. The two items kept in the warehouse, returned free of charge once ownership is confirmed. The one item already sold, repaid in installments.
"How many months for the installments." Mirae asked.
"Twenty four."
Changing his rating took two seconds. The number in the upper right of the screen dropped from four to one.
Gyeongmin pulled the screen down to refresh. No new entries appeared. He refreshed six times over ten minutes.
At the thirty one minute mark, one appeared. It was another seller's trade, with the same wording. The registration time was earlier than the owner's return.
Gyeongmin pressed his finger to that line. Without lifting it, he pulled down to refresh again.
Within an hour, two more appeared.
"That's four." Mirae counted. "Seven, counting your three."
"Dohyeon said three would be enough." Gyeongmin said.
Mirae called Dohyeon. He answered and asked right away.
"How many."
"Seven." Mirae said.
"Then it can be calculated." Dohyeon said. Behind him, the sound of pages turning. "If it's a server error, all seven will skew in the same direction. If it's not an error, the direction will mix. Give me thirty minutes."
Thirty minutes became thirty four.
"Six of the seven point the same direction." Dohyeon said. "Registration before return. The remaining one is the opposite."
"Then is it an error." Mirae asked.
"No. If it were an error, the deviation would be random. This is six to one, and the lead time on all six falls between one and two hours." Dohyeon said. "There's a pattern. A server mistake wouldn't produce this."
Mirae wrote the sentence down and beside it wrote observation. She didn't write conclusion.
"What about the one that's opposite." Mirae asked.
"That's the most important thing right now." Dohyeon said. "That one belongs to an owner who's alive and still on the list. If you're still on the list, registration comes after the return."
"So the order is tied to whether a person is on the list." Mirae asked.
"It looks that way. That's still an observation." Dohyeon said.
After the call ended, Gyeongmin asked a question.
"Will my rating go back up."
"I don't know." Mirae said.
"Then write that down too." Gyeongmin said. "The fact that someone paid a price has to be kept on record. Not because I'm a good person, but because the next person who does the same thing should know the cost beforehand."
"How much of a loss is it." Mirae asked.
"I used to get twelve jobs a month. Now it's six." Gyeongmin slung the cargo strap over his shoulder. "My mother's payment date is in twenty days."
"What will you do about that."
"I'll take the warehouse night shift."
Mirae wrote that number down too. Oh Gyeongmin, exchange rating 4 to 1, monthly hauls twelve down to six, night shift added, recovery unconfirmed.
The warehouse door opened. At 2:12, the trading partner arrived. He looked at the helmet, saw it still sitting on the shelf, and said nothing.
Then, as he left, he left behind one sentence.
"That number, I've seen it too. It responded three days ago."
Mirae took two steps toward the door.
"Where did you see it."
"In my own search list." the man said. "I was going to buy that item too. When I searched to buy it, active came up. I don't buy active items. If the owner is alive, it becomes a problem later."
"Then why did you come today."
"To get a working bracelet." the man said. "There are eleven active ones on my search list. All eleven belong to people who aren't on the list. I can't find those people. If I have one bracelet, I can try calling on the same frequency band."
Mirae's hand stopped.
"Why are you doing that."
The man didn't answer. He turned at the threshold, and before leaving, added one more line.
"One of the eleven is my brother's."
The door closed. Mirae wrote the sentence down, and this time she didn't ask for a name.
One more person with the same wording had appeared. This time on the seller's side.
3:04 in the afternoon. Saebyeok walked over from the clinic. Yura's registration was still pending, and the oxygen tank had moved to its fourth.
