The Printer Was Running in the Locked Archive Room

The printer was running in the locked archive room.
The label pushed out under the door had no title.
Only the closure notice number field stood blacked out.
At 7:01, Mijin looked at Eunchae first on the field screen. Eunchae was outside the building, but she had stayed inside the safety strip, between the exterior staff stairwell door and the emergency door. No one had entered, the staff stairwell door was at 8 degrees, and the shelf fixture was unconfirmed.
"Eunchae, move to the guide vehicle."
Mijin tried to pull the citizen stakeholder out of the danger line before dealing with the archive room printer. One of the field team members opened the vehicle door in the south alley. That spot was 36 meters from the library's outer wall and outside the citizen detour line.
Eunchae did not move.
"If I step back, the archive room passage closes."
"No one's going in. It's fine if the passage closes."
"If it closes now, we can't even pull the camera out. The staff stairwell exterior door and the archive room's interior manual lock are linked."
The official blueprints had no such link. Like the wiring from 2023 that had never made it into the records, revealed back in chapter 22, this was a field change only Eunchae knew about.
Mijin's voice ran longer. "That's exactly why you need to step back more. You were the only one who knew about the facility change, and if you stay by the door now, the field team ends up waiting on your explanation too. I know you hate being called someone who needs protection. But we can't keep a citizen inside the danger line."
Eunchae answered low. "If you pull my knowledge out along with protecting me, the path only survives in one person."
The two of them split on the choice.
Mijin opened the forced withdrawal button and didn't press it. The responsibility for the team being put at risk because of the 3 centimeters and the wiring Eunchae had hidden still stood. But that didn't mean she could strip Eunchae of her site knowledge because of that responsibility, nor could she hold Eunchae at the site just because she was needed.
"I'll explain every risk first."
Mijin didn't add a joke. She read the current conditions in three lines.
`Staff stairwell exterior door at 8 degrees / possible shelf contact.`
`Children's archive room locked / printer operating after power cut.`
`No site entry / camera pole recovery route unconfirmed.`
She split the options into three as well.
First, Eunchae withdraws to the guide vehicle immediately and the field team leaves the door untouched. The camera pole stays in its current position, remote view only.
Second, Eunchae explains the locking sequence from outside the safety strip and the field team reenacts it with a mockup handle, then withdraws.
Third, Eunchae demonstrates the sequence once at the threshold, without anyone entering, without opening the archive room, and without moving the shelves. She moves to the vehicle right after the demonstration.
"How far are you willing to go?"
Mijin didn't rush the decision time. She let Eunchae choose after hearing the risks and the cost of withdrawal.
Eunchae counted the printer sounds coming from the archive room door. Two short, one long. "I'll do the second. If I touch it myself, it just turns into a sequence only I know again."
Dowon pulled a decommissioned door handle of the same spec as the staff stairwell exterior door out of the toolbox. He left the real door untouched and fixed the mockup to the floor outside the safety strip.
Eunchae broke the locking sequence down by location number and direction.
"The west exterior door, half turn to the right. The archive room's inner pull door, lift the handle 15 degrees up, then once to the left. After that, push the manual lever under the low C-4 shelf down toward the floor."
Dowon moved the mockup handle. Half turn right, 15 degrees up, once left.
"What does the lever look like?"
"Gray. 12 centimeters long. Two layers of yellow insulating tape at the end."
Eunchae didn't explain by mouth alone. She drew the three doors on paper. The exterior door, the archive room door, the C-4 shelf. She wrote the locking direction and the stop condition next to each door.
`Exterior door, do not exceed 8 degrees.`
`Archive room handle, stop after 2 points of resistance.`
`If the shelf lever doesn't reach the floor, do not reverse it, fix it in place.`
Two field team members redrew the sequence without looking at each other. Dowon reenacted it with the mockup, the other member with words. Yuna, from the center, compared whether the three records matched in order.
The first reenactment failed. The other member turned the archive room handle left first.
Eunchae corrected it right away. "The 15 degrees up comes first. If the order flips, the fire door latch catches."
The second reenactment, all three got it right.
The sequence survived even without Eunchae. If one person lost radio contact, there were still two sheets of paper and the mockup footage. The site knowledge had stopped being a key bound to Eunchae's body and become a procedure the team could verify.
Yuna didn't merge the three records into one file. She sealed Eunchae's drawing, Dowon's mockup footage, and the other member's verbal reenactment separately. Only a results table confirming the sequences matched was linked to all three hashes.
Dowon deliberately caught one point of resistance on the mockup handle. The other member let go before the second point of resistance and said "stop." Not just the normal sequence Eunchae had taught them, but the failure condition too got reenacted.
Only then did Mijin log the procedure into the field knowledge ledger. The title wasn't "Eunchae's Locking Method."
`Hanbit Library human passage manual lock / verified by mockup, no entry.`
Even with one person's name removed, the source field still recorded who had first shared it. She didn't anonymize the citizen's contribution just because the site knowledge was now shared.
Only then did Mijin ask about the withdrawal scope again. "Can you walk to the vehicle alone, or do you need an escort?"
"One escort. But that person can't be from the field team. Don't thin out the headcount at the door."
Eunchae didn't spend the rescue team's manpower on her own protection. The citizen guide staffer came over the south ramp and stood next to Eunchae. The two of them went outside the safety strip but kept the radio open.
Mijin didn't cut Eunchae out of the call. She had her choose again whether to stay on as a remote observer from inside the vehicle, or end the call entirely.
"I'll stay remote. But I'll only add to the operating instructions after the field team reads the sequence first."
The citizen stakeholder wasn't excluded, and she wasn't given sole authority to approve dangerous field actions either.
The safety notice around the library changed too. Instead of a single line reading "facility under inspection," it disclosed the current conditions in full: staff stairwell and archive room access prohibited, south ramp passage maintained, tour cancellation ongoing, and the field team itself not entering the building.
A resident from the walking path asked why only the librarian got pulled out to the vehicle while the workers stayed. Mijin didn't describe Eunchae as the cause of the danger or as a rescue target. She answered that the site knowledge had been handed over through mockup, paper, and footage, and that the field team at the door wasn't entering, only recovering the exterior camera.
The resident reported that the south ramp signage was blocked by a delivery truck. Before moving to the vehicle with Eunchae, the citizen guide staffer moved the signage 2 meters. Disclosed information corrected the field routing again.
Eunchae watched that scene from in front of the vehicle door and said, "Correct my explanation the same way. Keep only what's right, and don't erase who corrected it."
Mijin didn't approve the citizen's words just because the intent was good. She had Dowon cross check the mockup sequence against the door directions on the actual blueprint again. The exterior door direction and the archive room pull door matched, but the C-4 lever wasn't on the blueprint at all.
`Lever's existence / needs Eunchae's statement and past inspection photos.`
The one unconfirmed step stayed in the procedure as a yellow hypothesis. Eunchae agreed to that limitation too.
At 7:07, a second label came out from inside the locked archive room.
The camera under the door only showed the label's blacked out box and the empty title field. It was the same printer width as the first label, but the toner sheen was different. She didn't confirm it as the same output from a single channel alone.
Yuna laid the photo of the archive room's disposal label side by side with the heat marks along the edges of the two current sheets. The first sheet was hotter on the right, the second hotter on the left. She didn't know whether it was the same machine that had changed orientation, or a different paper feed path.
Dowon checked the camera pole's recovery route. The pole had gone in through the emergency door's exterior duct, not the 8 degree gap of the staff stairwell door. What connected directly to the manual lock Eunchae had explained was the archive room passage, not the camera pole itself.
Mijin didn't treat Eunchae's account as wrong. "What Eunchae knows is the human passage. The camera route is separate. Log both."
Eunchae answered from the vehicle. "That's right. I assumed the camera used the same passage too."
Site knowledge got revised when it met a counterexample. It wasn't discarded just for being a citizen's word, and it wasn't placed above the blueprint just because it came from the person involved.
The field team pulled the camera back 10 centimeters through the duct without anyone entering. The floor under the archive room door came into wider view. A thin red line ran between the two labels.
Dowon logged the line as toner or ink, not blood. Before inserting a swab, he photographed it under UV and heat response first. The red line was a mark dried by heat, and it wasn't spreading currently.
A third sheet of paper pushed out from behind the labels.
This time there wasn't even a blacked out notice number field.
`Passage maintenance condition.`
A line of red text formed underneath it.
`Return one worker.`
Mijin didn't read the sentence as an order. She checked the printing time and the physical results first. The paper had printed at 7:08:17. At that moment, Eunchae's radio in the vehicle was normal, and every field team member had responded.
The archive room door handle hadn't moved. The staff stairwell exterior door still held at 8 degrees.
The only thing currently confirmed was the fact that a locked door had printed out a sentence demanding one person as a cost.
On the center screen, a new assignment field opened at the same moment as the sentence. Names came up in order on the handler selection list: the field team, Eunchae, Mijin. When no name was selected, a 17 second time limit began.
Mijin didn't make the old choice of pulling the cost onto her own name. She captured the list, blacked out the names, and kept only the fact that the three roles had been presented as candidates. Dowon sent an assignment refusal confirmation tone from the field, and Eunchae said from the vehicle that she gave no consent.
Three refusals from three different positions all aligned. Even after the time limit ran out, the headcount and the radio responses didn't change. She didn't confirm one instance of no change as a safety rule, but there was no physical basis for a demand that the passage would only hold if someone was returned right now.
Eunchae said low over the radio. "The archive room's manual lock doesn't release with a worker's card. That sentence isn't our procedure."
Mijin didn't call Eunchae back to the field.
"I know. That's why no one is being returned."
The citizen withdrawn to the vehicle, the field team at the door, and the team lead at the center all rejected the same sentence from three different positions.
The locked staff archive room door printed the red text once more, darker than before.
`Return one worker.`
