A voice like Nam Sangho's called Baek Dowon from inside the locker.

"Dowon."

Baek Dowon didn't answer.

The door was open two finger widths. The gap inside was darker than the locker's depth, and only the green receive light of the shockproof radio blinked at uneven intervals. Whether breath was moving behind the steel plate, or whether an old speaker was just cutting noise wrong, couldn't be told.

Dowon didn't pull the door open any further. He pulled his right foot back half a step toward the exit and pressed the radio button twice.

The same two confirmation tones came back from Seoha's terminal.

"Current door gap, two fingers. No contact. Name unconfirmed."

He reported it in short. The voice called Dowon again.

"Why are you turning away again."

It wasn't the last thing Sangho had said inside the drainage channel seven years ago. But it resembled the sentence Dowon had heard rearranged hundreds of times inside his own head, ever since he'd been pushed out of that scene alone.

Dowon's hand moved once toward the locker handle, then stopped.

"If you open it now, that's not confirmation, that's deciding which side you want to believe." Seoha said.

Dowon didn't look at Seoha. "I know."

"I'm not telling you to close the door either. You choose the field call."

Only then did Dowon turn his head to the side. Seoha stood outside the entry line, the protective film still stuck over the bruises on both hands. She wasn't trying to write the conclusion in front of the screen for him, the way she had seven years ago.

"No solo entry. No name. Object first."

Dowon spoke his own choice out loud.

At 4:44, Gitae unfolded the mobile tool handover stand in the middle of the corridor. Mijin stuck the yellow entry line to the floor without raising her hurt arm. Yuna pulled up the original S-07 card signal and the new recording folder on separate screens. No one moved the shockproof radio into Sangho's personal-effects bin.

Dowon took three wrenches out of the center's shared toolbox. Seventeen, nineteen, and twenty-two millimeters. Only the nineteen-millimeter wrench had a black cloth strap wound below the handle.

"Is this the one Chief Sangho used?" Gitae asked.

"Don't call him that."

Dowon set the wrench on the electronic scale. 286 grams. Eleven grams heavier than a common new unit. Inside the right jaw was a crescent nick from misgripping a pipe, and the cloth strap was wound three times at the end of the handle with the knot tucked inward.

"I'm not passing this on memory alone."

He asked Yuna for the 2019 tool ledger photo. The wrench in the photo had the same crescent nick. But the weight wasn't recorded, and the strap had been gray back then. Whether the current black strap had been wound by Sangho himself couldn't be known.

Seoha asked. "What was the normal handover order?"

Dowon closed the wrench jaw and set the dial to zero. "Receiving side reads the spec, giving side states the flaw, receiving side confirms the repair order again."

"A voice matching doesn't confirm a person."

"Tool pass, that's one."

Dowon laid the wrench on a dry cloth and photographed it. He pushed a transparent handover plate between the handle and the locker door. There was a shallow groove that let tools pass through without a hand ever coming out.

He pushed the wrench through the gap.

A long burst of radio static came from inside. The wrench head crossed into the dark, but the end of the handle stayed on the plate for a moment.

The thumb and index finger of a gray work glove appeared. There was no moisture on the glove's fingertips. Only black dust and a long-hardened film of grease. The fingers didn't deviate from human size or movement. That fact wasn't proof of identity either.

The glove took hold of the wrench.

Dowon swallowed the word chief back down his throat.

The wrench didn't come back.

When the weight shifted inside the door, the retaining bolt slid two millimeters. Gitae reached to brace it with his hand, and Dowon blocked the entry line with his forearm.

"Don't touch it. Watch the bolt marking only."

Yuna magnified the floor ruler. 41 to 43. Whether it was the force of the door opening or the recoil of the wrench being pulled from inside couldn't be told. Gitae didn't wedge the spare shim into the door but set it down on the floor. Adding the shim would change the state of the threshold, and pulling it could close the only passage of two finger widths.

"Who's holding the tension?" Seoha asked.

Dowon didn't offer his own arm. "Not a person, the bolt. Automatic release above three kilos of load. Pull the outside cord and it closes from out here."

He connected a spring scale to the safety cord and had Gitae read the numbers. Gitae called out 0.8 kilos. Mijin wrote the door's condition on the patrol log, and only then did Dowon step back behind the entry line. Not calling the name wasn't just standing firm and waiting. It was building the next failure in advance, so that no one's hand would end up tied to that door.

4:46 passed and became 4:47. A, B, C, and the drainage pump were still down. The A field team had bagged the broken seal ring as evidence, and the old man had gone home with his family. There had been no further call from Jaeho. Seoha's 2019 file still hadn't been deleted.

Every minute they waited now extended the citizen facility outage. Even so, there was no basis for saying that calling the name and opening the door would restore those facilities.

The voice said.

"Dowon, you have to get the person out first."

Dowon exhaled short through his nose. Sangho had been a chief who counted heads first whenever pressure rose. But once a tool handover had started, he'd said something else.

Dowon deliberately got the order wrong.

"Nineteen. Crescent on the right jaw. Strap wound three times from the end, outward."

The inside of the locker went quiet.

Mijin bit her lip. Yuna only wrote in the waveform log, `repair order question 04:48:52`. She didn't enter an answer candidate first.

A low noise like breathing came from the shockproof radio.

"Three times inward."

The voice cut off, then continued.

"Knot goes under the groove so it doesn't catch the palm. Tool before people."

Dowon's jaw tightened. He didn't call Sangho's name.

"Why."

"If the tool comes back, you can confirm what a person did."

A beat later, the same sentence repeated, lower.

"Tool before people."

Mijin got as far as "Sangho..." then stopped. She didn't attach a joke or an apology afterward. Instead she recorded her own slip.

"Kang Mijin, 04:49:21. Stopped just before uttering the name. No contact."

Metal scraped the steel plate from inside the door gap.

The wrench came back onto the transparent plate.

Dowon didn't grab it bare handed. Gitae lowered the end of the plate further and Yuna took a burst of photos from above, then Dowon put on two layers of nitrile gloves before securing the wrench handle.

The weight was 291 grams.

It had gained 5 grams.

Inside the jaw was a thin coat of dark blue grease. It hadn't hardened like seven-year-old oil. Pressing with the edge of a glove shifted the surface, and the temperature sticker read 3.1 degrees higher than the corridor. Dowon didn't inhale the smell directly, pushing the air toward the collection canister lid instead.

"Silicone based. Not our center's common stock."

Gitae checked the current materials list. It was also different from the lithium based grease used by the A, B, C field teams. Where or when it had gotten on there couldn't yet be determined.

The cloth strap had one new repair mark. A white thread had passed through twice below the existing knot, its end pressed into the wrench groove. Dowon didn't say the method was Sangho's, but found a white thread in the same position in a 2018 tool repair photo.

"Possible match. One independent sample."

Seoha repeated his own words back to him. "Not confirmed survival. Not confirmed location."

Dowon pressed the radio button twice. This time two short bursts of static came back from the shockproof radio inside the locker. Whether it was a random cutoff or a confirmation signal wasn't decided from one instance.

A folded waterproof memo was wedged under the wrench handle.

At 4:52, Yuna didn't pull the paper out but moved it to the handover stand still attached to the wrench. She photographed the direction the grease had smeared, the folded surface, and the point touching the white thread first. Mijin swallowed the words she'd been about to cover with coffee smell and told Jeongho to bring the storage room's volatile compound detector.

The first line of the paper was visible even through the folded gap.

`Zone 7`

Dowon asked the locker. "Which building."

Static came back instead of an answer.

"Address."

The voice said. "Don't close it."

"Not the door. What."

"Don't close Zone 7."

After that, no address or floor number came even to the same question. The voice went back and forth between "Don't close Zone 7" and "Tool before people." Whether the memory had broken off, whether a recorded sentence was repeating, or whether it was dodging the question couldn't be distinguished.

Dowon didn't open the door any further. "Only what's come out now counts as handed over. The person's return is incomplete."

Seoha didn't turn his decision into an approval sentence. "I'll write it that way in my record too."

At 4:55, Yuna unfolded the memo inside a transparent bag. She didn't wipe the grease off with water or solvent. She photographed the pressed marks first under angled lighting, then split smell, surface temperature, fold order, and the surface touching the wrench into separate items.

The memo had three lines.

`8/11 04:52`

`Tool before people.`

`Don't close Zone 7.`

The date and time matched now, when the wrench had come back. But who had written it inside, and whether time inside the locker matched the center's, hadn't been proven.

Dowon set a copy of Sangho's 2018 work log beside it. The vertical stroke in the character for `tool` in "tool first" was short, and the last stroke of "don't close" pulled long to the right. Some habits resembled it, but the sample was only three lines.

Mijin said. "Voice, repair order, current grease, the note. Four things."

Yuna sorted it out right away. "Not confirmed as independent from each other. One device could have imitated all of them."

"Right. Just raise the probability."

Dowon didn't leave the front of the locker, but he didn't cross the entry line either. "High probability of being alive. Rescue conditions unknown. Maintain the two finger gap until the next handover."

Gitae logged the door bolt position on the patrol sheet under his own name. Mijin split the assignment between S-07 surveillance and the personnel responding to the citizen facility outage. She kept one locker from swallowing four facility failures at once.

Seoha took out her own 2019 signature copy from the encrypted envelope. She didn't lay it over the original memo, placing it on a second transparent plate instead. Yuna just lined up the two screens at the same magnification.

The body text of Sangho's document and the front part of the memo were different.

But the final stroke of "close" curved down long, then broke to the right.

The last stroke of Seoha's signature broke in the same spot.

When the two screens were overlaid semi transparently, one line lined up exactly at the end.
