The One Frame That Never Repeated

At 00:20, right after the reset, the first thing I did was write down a number.
3127.
The physical footage was gone. Hong Sanguk's blood, Lee Juwan's statement, the sleeve caught on the storage room plastic, all of it had gone back to where it was the day before. What remained was a single number in my memory ledger. Numbers don't lie. But they often lose track of where they came from.
I wrote this on the first line of the ledger.
`3127 / storage room local buffer / key frame / source, end of L03`
Recording the source was for my own sake. If later I got confused about whether I'd heard this number in the third loop or seen it in the fourth, the frame would stop being evidence and become an incantation instead.
Kang Taejun still didn't remember everything. Even after seeing my ledger, he didn't write down the word loop.
"State the reproduction conditions."
"Storage room camera, coat position, whether Lee Juwan approaches, simultaneous recording on the central network and local storage."
"Is the goal to prove innocence."
"No. It's to find the point where a difference appears."
He wrote down my answer once more. This time he left out the word innocence. I liked that about him. If this experiment only served to save me, it would fail. The moment I saved myself, I might let go of someone else's hand.
"I need three segments."
I said.
Kang Taejun stopped his pen.
"Why three."
"One segment where nothing is changed. One where Lee Juwan's approach is blocked. One where I only change what's said. We need to see whether the input changes even without touching anything directly."
"You're claiming speech is also an input."
"The cup proved that in chapter 10."
He didn't dislike the cup story. He didn't like it either. Instead he wrote "verbal input" in the next column. Next to it he added a question mark. Anything with a question mark attached wasn't on my side yet. That was exactly why he could write it.
"Write the failure condition too."
"If 3127 appears with no condition at all, my hypothesis fails. If I change the input and there's no difference in the record, that's also a failure."
"And?"
"If the number I remembered turns out to be wrong, the memory ledger itself becomes suspect."
Kang Taejun wrote that sentence the slowest. There had to be a failure condition that worked against me too. Otherwise this wasn't an experiment, it was persuasion.
At 08:00, three independent cameras were set up in front of the storage room.
Before Go Yura taped anything down, she made a position chart. Upper left of the doorframe, front of the coat, floor reflection. She tied her own test recorder under the camera and deliberately left out the central network cable.
"One's the facility camera, one's my local recorder, one's Noeul's phone. The phone's in airplane mode. Even if the time is off, the order stays intact."
Noeul fixed his phone to the tripod and showed me the screen angle. He asked by text.
`Where can't I see.`
I pointed to the inside of the storage room. Behind the coat, and the blind corner to the right of the door. Noeul wrote those two spots on paper and taped it beside the camera. He was the kind of person who posted what he couldn't see before he posted what he could.
Go Yura didn't touch the folds of the coat. Instead she took photos, then marked people's positions on the floor with thin tape. My mark was three steps behind the door. Where Lee Juwan would normally have entered, she set an empty chair. It was to separate the three minutes where the input stayed the same from the three minutes where it changed.
"If this is an experiment, there should be a control group."
Go Yura said.
"In plain language."
"Start with the three minutes where nothing gets touched."
Noeul stuck one more small note next to his phone.
`Sound cannot be recorded.`
Go Yura saw the note and gave a thumbs up. Noeul didn't smile, just adjusted the screen angle again. Angle came before smiling, for him. To him, testimony wasn't a favor, it was a matter of his own range of view.
Lee Juwan hadn't arrived yet. Baek Somyeong stood at the end of the hallway holding a camera, but Kang Taejun pushed her back outside the yellow tape.
"Filming is allowed. Directing is not."
"Reporters aren't allowed to direct?"
"That would make you a participant in the scene."
Baek Somyeong closed her mouth and only lowered the lens. Today everyone had to push their own desires back a little. If one person moved ahead, the input would change.
At 08:30, nothing happened in the first reproduction.
That was the reward. Noeul carried the cups past the storage room. The same order as before. Rag in his left hand, two cups in his right. The automatic door opened a beat late, and before it closed, a white sleeve crossed the floor reflection. Oh Sejin's coat. He didn't look into the storage room.
I only checked off the observation items in my ledger. Noeul's step count, the door's delay, the cup reflection, Oh Sejin's gaze. I didn't want to write that everything matched. The phrase perfect repetition covers too much ground. The four items I observed matched. That much was accurate.
Kang Taejun looked at my ledger and said.
"Under the same input, the observed items repeat."
"That's only four items."
"Under four items, they repeat."
He corrected himself right away. That kind of correction was better than trust. Trust often lets people see too broadly. What we needed right now was a narrow sentence.
At 08:40, we blocked Lee Juwan in the second reproduction.
More precisely, Kang Taejun spoke to him in front of the storage room. Lee Juwan took two steps toward the coat and stopped. He checked his wristwatch and said that even before receiving the envelope, he needed to confirm the evidence preservation procedure.
"Are you going to leave that sentence in the record."
Kang Taejun asked back.
Lee Juwan took eleven seconds to answer. During those eleven seconds, Bae Junho stood waiting in front of the door with a box of weather data. The automatic door caught on Bae Junho's elbow and stayed open longer than usual. On Noeul's phone screen, the open door time lingered.
The coat never moved. The 3127 frame never appeared.
Instead, a different difference showed up. Because Bae Junho had held the storage unit door open so long, the internal temperature warning triggered two seconds early. Go Yura saw the warning and saved the central network log and the local log at the same time.
"The frame didn't appear, but the warning changed."
"The input changed."
I said.
Go Yura wrote it down quickly.
"Lee Juwan's approach blocked, Bae Junho's eleven second wait, storage unit door held open longer, temperature warning triggered early. This isn't a key frame, it's a chain of differences."
She was the type to attach three questions when excited, but today she attached items instead. It's too early to call it growth. Still, it was a good change.
At 08:52, in the third reproduction, I changed only a single sentence.
It was the point where I would normally have told Lee Juwan, "Don't touch the coat." This time I said nothing, and instead asked Baek Somyeong.
"Are you also keeping the original timestamp of the shot you took of the envelope box."
Baek Somyeong raised her camera right away.
"That question sounds more like evidence than a news story."
"Just answer."
She opened the lens cap, then stopped. Because of those two seconds, Lee Juwan didn't pass by the coat, he watched Baek Somyeong's movement in front of the envelope box first. A camera came between the coat and Lee Juwan. No one touched the coat, but the flow of movement changed.
Go Yura displayed the third screen. The 3127 frame didn't appear. Instead, at frame 2984, the red recording light on Baek Somyeong's camera reflected off the glass of the storage unit. It was a difference I hadn't predicted.
"One wrong prediction."
Kang Taejun said.
I wrote in the ledger.
`Verbal input: Baek Somyeong's recording light reflection occurred. No key frame. Unexpected difference.`
An unexpected difference wasn't a failure. Hiding it would make it one. Go Yura saw that sentence and made a folder below the screen with the same name. Unexpected Difference.
At 09:10, we played the three screens side by side in the control room.
In the segment where the input wasn't changed, the four observation items repeated. In the segment where Lee Juwan was blocked, 3127 disappeared and a temperature warning appeared instead. In the third segment, where I hadn't approached the coat and only changed a question, people's movements shifted, but the coat frame never appeared.
Kang Taejun didn't cross his arms. He rested his left hand on the table, as if conscious of the old injury to his wrist.
"Not a prophecy. A conditional statement."
He said.
Go Yura looked up.
"What?"
"It doesn't mean I believe everything Seo Ihyeon says. But when you change the condition, the result changes, and when you leave the condition alone, the observed items repeat. That procedure can be used."
He looked at me.
"Wrong predictions get written in the same ledger too."
"They already are."
"I'll decide when they get shown."
"Is that cooperation, or surveillance."
"Mutual surveillance."
A new term. Colder than cooperation, less closed off than custody. I judged that was enough.
Go Yura made a table below the three screens. Input maintained, physically blocked, verbal input. Results: observation repeated, temperature warning triggered early, recording light reflected. The key frame appeared in neither.
"Then 3127 didn't happen just because Lee Juwan approached the coat."
"There must be another condition present alongside the approach."
I said.
Kang Taejun added right away.
"Or we still haven't reproduced the same condition."
He was right. Because we'd blocked Lee Juwan's approach, we hadn't reproduced the actual condition under which he pulled out the key. We hadn't gained innocence. We'd gained one step toward knowing this wasn't random. That difference mattered.
"It's not a complete conclusion."
I said.
"That's exactly why I trust the procedure. Not the conclusion."
Kang Taejun didn't close the ledger. Not closing it meant he was ready to receive more items.
I held out the left page of the ledger to him. On it were listed only the things I'd gotten wrong. The target of the cup accident, Baek Somyeong's recording light reflection, Bae Junho's temperature warning. The wrong predictions stayed with Kang Taejun longer than the right ones.
"Why show me this side first."
"If I only show you what I got right, you'd have to see me as a con artist."
"And right now."
"A participant who could ruin the experiment."
He didn't dislike that answer.
"That sounds about right."
The remark wasn't praise. That was exactly why it could be trusted.
At 09:12, Mun Rahee opened the control room door.
She didn't look at the screens first. She looked at the cable number tags Go Yura had put up, then the power cords of the independent cameras. Designers always look at the power first. That wasn't strange.
"Have you checked the local buffer."
Mun Rahee asked.
Go Yura answered.
"Working on it."
"Look at the 3127 frame again."
The control room didn't stop. The fans kept spinning, the numbers on the screen kept climbing. Only people's hands froze, each in a different place. Go Yura's hand over the keyboard, Kang Taejun's over the ledger, mine over the Q-13 key.
Go Yura spoke slowly.
"I haven't said that number out loud yet."
Mun Rahee moved only one eyebrow.
"I saw it in the design documentation."
"Which design documentation."
"The camera buffer specification."
That answer was possible. Which made it harder to dismiss. Mun Rahee never said she remembered the loop. She never put the words hidden rememberer into our mouths either. She set up one possible wrong answer right away. Designer's knowledge. A manual. Someone who happened to know the same number by coincidence.
Kang Taejun asked.
"If it's a specification number, why tell us to look at that particular frame again."
Only then did Mun Rahee look at the screen. 3127 hadn't been pulled up yet. In Go Yura's file list, the number was still collapsed.
"Errors occur frequently at that number."
"Don't you dislike the word frequently."
At my words, Mun Rahee looked at me. I couldn't read her expression. But the answer came late.
"Let me correct that. It occurs under specific conditions."
Specific conditions. The same bones as what we'd been trying to prove today. I wrote Mun Rahee's sentence in the ledger. I didn't write rememberer. I didn't write designer's knowledge either.
`Mun Rahee mentioned undisclosed number 3127 in advance. Explanation given: design documentation. Verification needed.`
A frame number that Go Yura hadn't read aloud to anyone yet, Mun Rahee had stated exactly.
That number didn't point to the killer. It also wasn't proof that Mun Rahee was a rememberer. But the same number had walked out ahead, from outside the file name we'd kept closed. I left the next line of the ledger blank. I needed to see who would fill it in.
Kang Taejun looked at that blank line and didn't cover it up. Mutual surveillance wasn't over. It had only just gained one more party.
Mun Rahee admitted to nothing. So we confirmed nothing. But we wrote her name next to 3127.
The next experiment would have to start over again under her conditions. Soon.
