Bora tried to write her name twice.
The first Kim Bora came out clear. The second stopped halfway through the initial letter, the pen just froze. It wasn't that her hand had gone weak. It looked like the letter itself was being pushed off the page.
Seojin didn't take the pen from her.
"Don't write it again. I'll attach a witness next to it instead."
Bora bit her lip.
"I can't even write my own name?"
"It's not that you can't. It's that if you write it alone, it gets erased faster."
That was the whole explanation. Seojin called over Jeongmin, who sat next to Bora, and Lee Seohyeon, who sat in front of her. Neither wanted to stand up. If they stood, their own names might get called next.
"You can answer from where you are. Where is Kim Bora's seat?"
Jeongmin pointed at the chair next to Bora.
"Here."
"What was the last thing she said?"
Lee Seohyeon answered in a small voice.
"Something about a gym uniform."
Seojin wrote both answers on the same line. Kim Bora, fifth row, left seat, witnessed discussing gym uniform rental. Jeongmin and Seohyeon each signed from their own desks. Seojin held onto the paper. Bora watched it without pausing to catch her breath. She made a demand right away.
"Put me down as a confirming witness too."
"I'll make a separate box for the person concerned."
Seojin drew one more box. In it, Kim Bora wrote not her name but the time stamped on the convenience store receipt clipped to her file. 10:31 p.m. Reporting party's arrival. Even as her name faded, the time still held.
Below that, Bora added one more line.
The file I brought here belongs to me.
The letters slipped once, midway through. Bora clenched her jaw and didn't rewrite it. Instead she drew an arrow next to the slipped letters. Slippage occurred. She didn't let someone else's words describe her own condition. She marked the error with her own hand.
Jeongmin held up Bora's pencil case.
"This is Bora's too. Same sticker."
The director said not to touch student belongings without permission. Jeongmin put the pencil case down at once. Seojin didn't have anyone bring objects over. Instead she had each student describe only what they could see from their own seat. The sticker on the pencil case, the chipped corner of the file, the blue highlighter Bora always used.
Lee Seohyeon spoke up.
"Bora only uses blue. When she checks her answers."
Bora corrected her right away.
"For math I use green too."
"Oh, right," Seohyeon said. The moment of correcting a wrong memory got recorded too. Seojin wrote corrected. A memory that could be corrected lasted longer than a perfect one.
The dismissal sign-out sheet shifted again. The line where Bora's name had been disappeared, and at the very back, by the empty seats, a box marked Empty Seat 1 appeared.
Bora's face went stiff when she saw it.
"That's not me."
"Not yet."
Doyun stood in the aisle so the other students couldn't turn to look at the empty seats. Not once did he tell Bora it would be fine. Instead he turned to the director.
"Where's the original night study roster?"
The director took his time answering.
"It's in the administration office."
"Bring it."
"I can't hand it over to an outsider."
Eunchae cut in over the phone.
"The parent notification server has two separate lists, a registration list and an actual attendance list. Only students with insurance coverage make it onto the night roster."
The director's expression changed at Eunchae's voice. Not angry, calculating.
"It's separated for insurance purposes. Every student was allowed to actually study here."
Seojin wrote the statement down.
Only insured students appear on the night roster. Differs from actual study attendance.
"How many students were left off the list?"
The director didn't answer.
Eunchae called out the number instead.
"Today's entry app for Building 3 logged 26. The insurance night roster has 23. A difference of 3."
The students started counting each other. With fingers, with eyes, with the seating chart. As the counting began, three of them went quiet. Unpaid fees, a class transfer, a pending consultation. The moment it became clear who fell into which category, problems from outside the academy walked straight into the classroom.
Seojin wrote down only the number. No names.
Discrepancy of 3. Names withheld. Disclosure forbidden until confirmed by those concerned.
Dogyeong read the line and copied it word for word into his phone. His face said he wanted to write up the academy's misconduct right that second. But he could also see that three students' names would come out along with it.
"This has real news value."
"Without the students' names."
"Then the academy will just deny it."
"We get the director's signature."
Seojin slid the signature line back toward the director.
Bora spoke up immediately.
"So if something happens, the kids who haven't paid just don't exist?"
The director said that wasn't what he meant. It wasn't the meaning that was the problem, it was the procedure. Seojin didn't write that sentence down. Instead she slid the signature line toward him again.
"Sign to confirm the operating standard you just described."
The director didn't pick up the pen.
The students fell quiet. It wasn't that quiet meant safe. They'd simply stopped talking to work out which list their own names were on.
On the desk at the empty seat sat Bora's workbook. Until a moment ago it had been in her bag. On the corner of the cover was a small sticker she'd stuck there herself. Jeongmin saw it and spoke up.
"That's definitely Bora's."
Seojin didn't thank Jeongmin for it.
"Give me one more piece of evidence."
"The sticker. We bought them together."
Seojin photographed the sticker and attached it beside Jeongmin's signature. Bora's name had gone faint in the attendance book, but the sticker on the workbook was still there.
Bora started to move toward the empty seat.
"That's my book."
Doyun blocked her.
"If you sit there, that becomes your seat."
Bora glared at him.
"So I can't even get my own book?"
Seojin didn't touch the workbook. She photographed it first, then had Jeongmin and Seohyeon confirm the sticker and the handwriting inside. After that, Doyun used a long ruler to slide the workbook over, a method that kept anyone's hand from actually reaching the empty seat.
The desk at the empty seat didn't move. But on the sign-out sheet, the Empty Seat 1 box flickered once.
On the surface, the rule was correct. Empty seats had to stay empty. But the rule never specified who got pushed into becoming one.
Bora held the workbook to her chest but didn't go straight back to her seat. She understood now that the seating chart might follow her there. Instead she set the workbook down beside Seojin's paper.
"Check first whether I'm allowed to take it back to my seat."
It sounded like she was asking for permission, but really she was preserving her own right to choose. Seojin asked Bora directly, then had Jeongmin and Seohyeon confirm it too. Only after all three nodded at the same time did the workbook go back to Bora's desk.
The seating chart on the desk wavered once, but Bora's row never fully vanished.
Even then, the director kept talking about insurance.
"Evacuating a student who isn't on the registered list complicates liability if something happens. And there's no guardian consent either."
Bora asked without smiling.
"And leaving someone behind isn't complicated?"
The director didn't answer.
An alarm sounded from a lower floor of the building. At first it was a different sound from the study room's speaker, a short, steady electronic tone. Doyun went to the door, then looked down the stairwell.
"It's real."
Just one word.
Eunchae spoke immediately.
"A fire's been reported in the electrical room, first floor of Building 3. This isn't a sprinkler test."
The students got to their feet. This time the smell of smoke outpaced any concern about demerits or sign-out sheets. The director headed for the door too. The automatic door was locked, but the emergency release button had lit up green.
Seojin wrote a name on Bora's wrist. Kim Bora. Beneath it, Jeongmin and Seohyeon each added a character of their own. The handwriting was crooked, but the pressure of each pen stroke was different.
Dogyeong raised his phone to photograph the wrist, then stopped.
Bora spoke first.
"You can photograph the wrist. Not my face."
Dogyeong photographed only the wrist. Location data was turned off. He named the file Bora_joint_witness_unverified. Again, he didn't post it right away.
The card beside the emergency door changed.
Leave unregistered students in the classroom. Evacuate registered personnel only.
A few students glanced at Bora. None held their gaze for long. Looking too long might mean taking on responsibility. Jeongmin grabbed her wrist, then let go right away. Then grabbed it again.
"She's registered. She's in our class."
Seohyeon spoke up too.
"She sits in front of me."
Seojin wrote both statements on the same paper. Joint witnessing wasn't a prayer. It was a structure in which people who could be wrong corrected each other.
The director hesitated in front of the emergency release button.
"We have to follow the card. Registered personnel first."
Dogyeong photographed the director, not his whole face but just his hand, the button, and the text on the card. This time he didn't look at Seojin for approval. It wasn't a desire to publish, it was the possibility that the director might later claim he'd never said any such thing.
"This gets kept on file even before it's verified."
"And sharing it?"
"No student faces, and delayed location."
He named the conditions himself. His tone was still rough, but his hand went to the settings screen before anything else.
Before pressing the button, Doyun lined the students up in two rows. Not a row for those on the registered list and a row for those still needing confirmation. A division like that would let the anomaly read it first. Instead he split them into a row near the door and a row near the windows.
"Don't line up by name. Line up by position."
The students didn't understand at first, but they lined up along the floor tile seams. Bora took the second spot on the window side. Jeongmin stood beside her, and Seohyeon behind her. They didn't put Bora in the middle. Standing in the middle would have made her look protected, and standing at the end would have made her look like someone about to be left behind.
Seojin wrote positioned by location.
Eunchae spoke up.
"The stairwell indicator light is reading off the insurance roster. The temporary witness record hasn't been factored in yet."
"What's the path to get it factored in?"
"Either academy administrator approval, or guardian confirmation."
The director spoke the moment he heard that.
"I can't change a student's status without guardian confirmation."
Bora picked up her phone.
"I'll call my mom."
She pressed the call button, but the screen displayed a message: Students on consultation hold are not eligible for guardian notification. Bora showed the message to Seojin. No voice came out of her. The text spoke for her instead.
Seojin told Bora to keep holding the phone herself. If Seojin held it instead, the failed guardian call might look like something she'd staged. Bora stood there holding the screen up. Jeongmin read out the time beside her.
"11:13 p.m."
Seohyeon read the message aloud.
"Students on consultation hold are not eligible for guardian notification."
Bora didn't repeat the sentence herself. She just held the screen up, like someone who didn't want to confirm with her own mouth the label attached to her.
Dogyeong photographed only the text on the screen. When the name on Bora's wrist crept into the bottom of the frame, he adjusted the angle.
"This one really should go out right now."
"Delayed location."
"I know."
Dogyeong scheduled the upload for the next morning. He hadn't given up on publishing it, just delayed it. Still, it wouldn't be duplicated out into the world just yet.
The smell of smoke drew closer. One student coughed. Only then did the director go looking for the actual emergency notice. It didn't say evacuate registered personnel first. It said evacuate all occupants. The card's wording and the notice's wording didn't match.
Seojin photographed the two documents side by side.
"Director, which document are we following?"
The director couldn't answer.
Bora spoke.
"I'm an occupant."
Jeongmin echoed her right away.
"Kim Bora, occupant."
Seohyeon said it too.
"Kim Bora, occupant."
Seojin didn't make the two students repeat the same words. Once was enough to make it a record. Instead she noted each of their signing times. 11:14 p.m., and 11:14 p.m. and 8 seconds. Even the same memory didn't form at the same instant.
The director looked at the paper and belatedly reached for a pen. But it wasn't a hand meaning to sign, it was a hand meaning to sweep the paper away. Doyun didn't grab his wrist. He pushed the desk leg with his foot instead. The corner of the desk slid between the paper and the director's hand.
"If you're going to sign, sign. If you're going to clear it away, leave your name and then clear it away."
The director set the pen down. Seojin wrote unsigned.
Beside the word unsigned, Bora added seen by director. The fact that the person in charge had witnessed it stayed on record.
Jeongmin wrote seen too.
Seohyeon wrote it as well.
Doyun pressed the button. The door opened halfway, then stopped. The indicator light by the stairs began reading the student list. Green lights lit up beside the registered names, and the line where Bora's name should have been stayed blank.
Bora held up her own wrist.
"I'm right here."
The indicator light didn't read wrists. The attendance book, the insurance roster, the parent app, all of them read Bora too slowly. The green light above the stairway door came on only next to the names of registered students.
The smell of smoke drifted into the study room.
The supervisor's voice announced,
"Registered personnel evacuate first."
The stairway door lit red right in front of Bora.
