The File That Never Reached Gray Thread

Han Kyeongmin did not bring the documents Gray Thread had demanded.

Instead he brought the documents Gray Thread would want hidden.

"The re-subcontracting list and the case repair ledger."

He didn't hand the envelope to Yeoreum. He set it down on the forensic table in the joint sealed storage room. His own name was written on the envelope.

Minu asked.

"If this material comes out, you're subject to disciplinary action too, Director."

"I know."

"Why submit it?"

"If I erase my own wrongdoing in exchange for handing over the material, the next person will hide their contract the same way."

Seojin stood outside the control line. Her analysis rights suspension hadn't been lifted yet. She looked at the ledger but didn't speak first.

Han Kyeongmin opened the ledger. Baek Sangho's name was in the outside contractor column, and beneath it were three nighttime jobs not listed in his contract. Server rack replacement, sensor inspection, remote access check.

"Which one is the day of the incident?" Yeoreum asked.

"The third one."

"Why did you hide that fact?"

"Building management responsibility falls on me."

"Because that responsibility was hidden, Han Jaehee's final minutes were delayed."

"That's why I'm submitting this now."

Han Kyeongmin also pulled out the parts purchase receipt. Four non standard washers, the replacement date, the worker's initials. Inside the right wheel axle of Case A was a washer of the same shape.

"Case A is a case that was repaired in our building."

"I'll look at the ledger and the parts together, not just memory." Yeoreum said.

She didn't correct Kyeongmin's sentences. Only after independently confirming the ledger's dates against the repair photos did she raise Case A to a candidate for the original transport case.

Baek Sangho pushed back.

"It's a shared case. Repairing it doesn't mean owning it."

"We're not confirming ownership, we're confirming the movement route." Minu said.

The forensic technician photographed the wheel axle of Case A. The washer's stamped mark matched the ledger photo, and the metal color of the replaced axle differed from the other three. There was still a possibility that Kyeongmin's explanation was a after the fact fabrication to clear himself, but the repair ledger and parts receipt narrowed that possibility.

"We collect from Case A first." Yeoreum decided.

"What does the analyst think?" Minu asked.

Seojin paused for a moment.

"I'll only provide observational data. Please have Yeoreum and Han Kyeongmin confirm the final identification."

Han Kyeongmin read through the material he had submitted again. He had to leave both the list that damaged him and the case identification in the same document.

At 11:26 PM, surface collection began. They divided the area into three zones: the inside of the wheel, the stair threshold height, and beneath the handle. Fluorescent paint turned up inside the wheel, and a dark microscopic trace was confirmed beneath the handle.

The forensic technician lifted the presumptive test strip.

"There's a possibility of a blood reaction."

Minu leaned forward, but Yeoreum raised her hand.

"Don't say whose it is yet."

Seojin watched the results from outside the control line. The possibility that the case had contacted the stairs, and the possibility that it had contacted the victim, both rose at once. That wasn't a conclusion that Baek Sangho had killed Han Jaehee. But the case had entered the physical chain of the incident.

Han Kyeongmin read the collection start time himself and signed it.

"11:26:41 PM. I confirmed it."

Seojin recorded his name. It was the moment a supporting character stopped being a function that merely handed over evidence, and became someone who took responsibility for how the evidence was left behind.

At 12:05 AM, on a bench outside the storage room, Han Kyeongmin said he would release the correction notice and the re-subcontracting violation record on the same day.

"Neither one can be allowed to cover the other."

"The residents will only see the re-subcontracting violation."

"I'll take that risk."

"Your name will remain on both records, Mr. Han."

"Let it remain."

Seojin asked him.

"Are you going to show this material to Dabin too?"

"Only the parts that don't include the informant's name. I'll decide the scope of disclosure with Dabin again."

Dabin came out of the storage room. Han Kyeongmin didn't ask her for forgiveness. Dabin didn't ask him to accept an apology either.

"I delayed my sister's time," Dabin said. "And you were suspected because of that fact, Director."

"I know."

"Even so, I won't say the child's name."

"I know that choice too."

Their relationship didn't return to reconciliation. Instead they put in writing which secrets each of them had chosen not to speak, and what losses they would accept because of those secrets.

Seojin added the fact of her own analysis rights suspension to the internal record. The ability's output had created a question, but the cost of hiding that question was what changed the team's rules.

Just then Han Kyeongmin's phone rang. The sender wasn't Baek Sangho. On the screen was a single short sentence.

"Give us the child's name, and the Director's responsibility can be made to never have happened."

Han Kyeongmin captured the message. He said he wouldn't send it to Gray Thread right away, but would tell Dabin first.

Seojin waited for that choice. A person under protection also had the right to see the terms of a deal.

Han Kyeongmin didn't show Dabin the message as it was. He first covered the parts of the screen that could identify the sender and the scope of disclosure, then decided for himself which part Dabin could see.

"A deal has been offered."

"By who?"

"That's still being confirmed."

"Is it asking for the child's name?"

"Yes."

Dabin reached out her hand, then stopped.

"I want to see the original."

Han Kyeongmin held out the phone. Dabin read the screen and didn't cry right away. Instead, beneath the message, she wrote a question: "Can this be passed on to Gray Thread?"

"Pass it on."

"Should the name be blacked out?"

"Black out the name, but leave the fact that a deal was offered."

Yeoreum turned that choice into a document. It was a method of separating the protected person's name from the existence of the threatening message. Dabin decided the scope of disclosure by her own will, and Han Kyeongmin didn't decide a deal favorable to himself alone.

Minu contacted Baek Sangho.

"Did you offer Han Kyeongmin an immunity deal?"

"I don't know anything about it."

"The message was sent from your number."

"Someone else could have used my number."

Baek Sangho separated the account from the user again. This time the separation didn't look like a mere excuse. The sender record and the actual user needed to be confirmed separately.

Seojin put the time of the message and the time of the case collection on the same table. The offer had arrived after the collection was finished. Whether the culprit had known the evidence results and made the deal accordingly, or had simply exploited Kyeongmin's weak point, still couldn't be known.

"Who could have known the results of the case collection?"

Minu asked.

Yeoreum checked the entry log. Only Minu, Yeoreum, Dohyeon, Han Kyeongmin, Baek Sangho, and a staff member from the company's legal team had entered the storage room. Seojin had been outside the control line, but the fact of her analysis rights suspension and the collection location remained in the meeting minutes.

"There's a possibility that internal team information leaked."

Minu said.

"If we investigate a team member on possibility alone, the same problem will happen again," Seojin answered. "We need to check the entry logs and document access records first."

Minu accepted her opinion, but he didn't give Seojin direct investigative authority.

"This time Yeoreum will look at the records, and Dohyeon will check the device logs."

Seojin nodded. Whenever setting aside authority felt like defeat, she tried not to use her own feelings as judgment.

The preliminary forensic report arrived early the next morning. The fluorescent paint inside Case A's wheel was the same series as the paint on the eighth floor stairs, and the microscopic trace beneath the handle had a possible match to Han Jaehee's blood. Until confirmed by final analysis, none of it was legal fact.

Han Kyeongmin read the report and submitted the re-subcontracting list with his own name on it at the same time. He knew that the repair ledger he had originally used to identify the case also proved illegal outside contracting work.

"This material will speed up my disciplinary action."

"It could." Yeoreum said.

"Even so, submitting this is what lets the case be connected to the murder."

Seojin heard those words and didn't write that he had become a hero. It was a choice made by someone who understood that his own responsibility and another person's harm didn't cancel each other out.

Minu read the meeting minutes.

"Han Kyeongmin's providing of the material is not a condition for immunity. The re-subcontracting violation and the case identification evidence will each be reviewed separately."

Han Kyeongmin agreed with that sentence.

Dabin sealed the deal message and her own record of disclosure choices. In exchange for not disclosing the name, she left behind the fact that someone had tried to trade for that name.

Seojin checked the seal number. The word "return" and the vanished word "envelope" sat side by side in her notebook. The ability had created a question, and Han Kyeongmin's ledger and the forensic results had narrowed that question into a physical record.

But the new deal had aimed at a person's right to choose before it aimed at the physical chain of the case. Just as someone had swapped the case, someone had tried to take another person's name in exchange for erasing Han Kyeongmin's responsibility.

Han Kyeongmin said he would tell Dabin first. That one sentence changed the order of Gray Thread's investigation. Before turning the deal into evidence, the order was to return the choice to the person under protection.

At 9 AM, Han Kyeongmin submitted the correction notice and the re-subcontracting violation notice to the residents' representative together. Neither document stood in for the other. He said whether he would be reinstated was for the company to decide, and leaving his own name on record was for him to decide.

Dabin didn't forgive him. Han Kyeongmin didn't ask for forgiveness either. The two of them divided that day's responsibility by not speaking for each other's choices. Seojin left that scene in the case follow-up record. A correction wasn't a sentence that restored a relationship, it was a change of state that kept the next person from making the same mistake. That record also included the suspension of Seojin's own analysis rights. Leaving behind the authority to stop mattered longer than sharing a secret. That authority kept the next question alive. And it also changed the direction of the deal. Again.
