Choi Yul's Fingertip on the Final Clause

Choi Yul's fingertip stopped on the final clause of the sect code. Cold night wind rattled the window over paper where the ink had not yet dried. Cha Yeonho hid his left hand deep beneath the desk. The throbbing pain beneath the base of his thumb gnawed at his joints lower and thicker than it had the day before. Choi Yul lifted his head, pushed the papers aside, and spoke.

"From now on, whoever holds transmission rights in Hoeryu Gate will bear both the backlash responsibility and the medical compensation that comes with that weight. This is only a provisional reform, but for the next thirty days it will stand as precedent for every ruling in our sect."

Cha Yeonho bowed his head in respect. He glanced at An Sobin standing beside him. Inside her sleeve, her fingers kept fidgeting.

"Senior Brother, I just checked this against the payment records the physician sent over. Since the settlement ceremony, the backlash readings on Sobin's wrist joint have measured lower than before. Now even the youngest disciples don't have to worry about anyone's disapproval when they bind their bandages."

The record An Sobin held out was lined with neatly written numbers. Cha Yeonho straightened his spine as he looked at them. The lower numbers were the result of exercising the right to interrupt, but that also meant an equal amount of backlash had been thrown off somewhere else. He took the record from her and, for a moment, clenched and released his trembling left hand under the desk.

"Where is Do Gyeom. I heard a petition came in to forfeit the rank battle, but I haven't seen it myself."

"Brother Do Gyeom is helping with ledger repairs at the assessment table behind the archive right now. He said that under the provisional sect code you handed down, Senior Brother, anyone holding a position responsible for backlash has to check those numbers himself. He says finding the errors in the ledger matters more right now than his rank in the transmission order."

Cha Yeonho nodded briefly and made his way to the assessment table. A cold sting rose through the soles of his feet. Not once since the Reversal had he let his guard down on his own body's sensations. If his posture broke, his breathing would follow, and once his breathing broke, the cost of backlash returned straight to his joints. He remembered the aftermath of the sparring match he'd had with Do Gyeom the day before. At the assessment table, Baek Miryeong was examining the seal fragments with a cold eye. Do Gyeom silently handed her whatever tool she pointed to. The moment Baek Miryeong heard Cha Yeonho approaching, she lifted one seal fragment with her tweezers.

"This seal matches the one that came from the archive's sealed box. But Cha Yeonho, look at the back of it."

Where Baek Miryeong's fingertip pointed, there was a faint pressed mark. Beneath the neat Hoeryu Gate emblem, a wave shaped pattern rippled faintly, like something stamped in passing. Cha Yeonho held his breath and stared at it. That mark was clearly not Hoeryu Gate's. It was the seal of an outside merchant house.

"Why is this pressed in here."

Do Gyeom asked, frowning. Cha Yeonho looked at Baek Miryeong. She was already checking the composition of the ink and how deeply the paper had been pressed.

"This ink wasn't touched up recently. The timing of the pressure on the ledger's edge matches the timing of the seal impression. That means this seal was already sitting with the ledger months ago at least, long before the internal rules were ever set."

That meant no one had deliberately tampered with anything. It meant Hoeryu Gate's ledgers had been in a trading relationship with an outside merchant house from the very start. Cha Yeonho rubbed hard at his left thumb. He set a hand on Do Gyeom's shoulder and looked past the assessment table. There, Jin Mugyeol sat alone in the seat of honor, fidgeting with his sleeve. The sect leader's seat had been pushed back one place from where it usually sat. It was the direct result of Choi Yul's ruling on the transmission rights responsibility clause striking at Jin Mugyeol's authority.

"Master, I've confirmed where the ledger record came from. This isn't simple internal corruption. It's a debt connection to the outside."

Jin Mugyeol slowly lifted his head. His face was full of exhaustion. He looked at the seal fragment and answered quietly.

"Do you know what that means. Any sect entangled with an outside merchant house is bound to sink into the swamp of resource politics. Yeonho, what you exposed wasn't just the sect's dignity. You shook the entire old support structure that had been holding us up."

He stopped and stared steadily at Cha Yeonho. Cha Yeonho answered firmly.

"I know. But if we don't cut this connection, Hoeryu Gate will collapse under its own weight. What you were trying to cover, Master, wasn't corruption. It was a wound that had already festered open. Now it has to be opened and treated."

Silence filled the archive. Do Gyeom clenched his fist tight. An Sobin came up behind Cha Yeonho and gently took hold of the end of his sleeve.

"Senior Brother, if the outside merchant house already knows what's in this ledger, what happens at the next audit."

Cha Yeonho steadied his breath for a moment. The wave shaped mark on the seal was clear evidence. He decided not to rush into naming the merchant house an enemy. Sorting out internal responsibility came first, right now. He took the seal fragment and put it away in his own lockbox.

"We have to first find out whether the merchant house is an enemy or a trading partner. I'll report only the physical origin of this seal to Elder Choi Yul. The contents of the trade, we'll trace ourselves."

Just then, footsteps from the disciplinary disciples sounded outside the archive. Choi Yul had come back. He stood at the door, looked at Cha Yeonho, and spoke in a low voice.

"Cha Yeonho, a messenger has come from the Oro Genealogy Registry. A central report on the provisional reform has already gone up. For the next thirty days, your audit report will decide whether this sect survives."

Choi Yul's gaze lingered on Cha Yeonho's left hand. Cha Yeonho clenched his fist tighter to hide the pain. He could feel the sensation dulling in his fingertips. The cost of a wrong judgment was climbing up through his joints. But he did not back down.

"Understood. Within thirty days, I will put every ledger in order and make clear exactly where responsibility lies."

Cha Yeonho bowed to Jin Mugyeol and left the archive. Baek Miryeong followed him out and roughly grabbed his left wrist.

"Cha Yeonho, right now you're wearing down your own body to shoulder the sect's responsibility in place of everyone else. The injury from the settlement ceremony has gotten worse. You can't keep pushing like this."

"Senior Sister Miryeong, I can't stop now. Brother Do Gyeom and Sister Sobin are watching me. If I stop, they're the ones who will have to take up the transmission seat's backlash again."

Cha Yeonho shook off Miryeong's hand and walked down the corridor. Word that a central report had gone up meant outside pressure was about to grow fiercer. He ran his fingers over the seal fragment in his pocket once more. Hoeryu Gate's sect code had only changed by a single clause so far. The ledgers he still had to get through and the injuries he still had to pay off were only just beginning.

The next morning, an emergency council was called in the main hall. Choi Yul set the central report down on the desk and poured tea for Cha Yeonho.

"The merchant house's mark left on the seal, have you confirmed what it means. Tracing the trade route is the same as cutting off the sect's own lifeline of funds."

Cha Yeonho sat down and took the tea Choi Yul offered. The hand holding the cup trembled faintly.

"This mark is only a trace of a transaction, not the name of whoever ordered it. I won't treat it as a hostile act by the merchant house. Instead, I'll find the link, whose hands our sect's ledgers passed through on their way out to the world. That's the only way to make up for the harm done at the settlement ceremony."

A murmur ran through the elders. Jin Mugyeol watched Cha Yeonho without a word. He did not stop his disciple from making his own decision. Cha Yeonho took out the seal fragment and set it on the table.

"I will find out who entrusted this seal. The three day audit deadline has passed, but the real judgment is only beginning now."

At his words, Choi Yul set down his teacup. The doors of the main hall opened, and a messenger from outside came in carrying a bundle of documents. It was a notice sent from the central registry, announcing that the sect's transmission rights and responsibility ledgers would be reassessed. Cha Yeonho looked at his left hand as he took the papers. The pain had turned into something like numbness by now. He decided to accept this pain as part of the record. Now he had the chance to tear down and rebuild that entire system himself.

"Senior Brother, you need to sign the documents the messenger brought. The contents are different from before."

An Sobin hurried over and held out the documents. Cha Yeonho picked up the brush. Ink bled black at its tip. The moment he finished his signature, he felt just how small and heavy the responsibility he carried was, small as a fragment of a seal. Hoeryu Gate's new era was beginning this way, caught between an old ledger and a broken piece of seal. Wind blowing in from outside the door stirred the candlelight inside the main hall. Cha Yeonho set down the brush and pushed his left hand into his pocket. The next question was already waiting for him. Who had entrusted that seal. And why, of all people, had he left a wave shaped mark for Hoeryu Gate's youngest disciples to find. Cha Yeonho lifted his head and looked at the seat of honor in the main hall. Jin Mugyeol was already gone from it. Now it was his turn, as senior disciple, to fill that empty seat. The footsteps coming from the end of the corridor were not Choi Yul's. They were the steps of strangers who had come from outside the sect. Cha Yeonho rose from his seat. Pain shot through his whole body, but he held it down and turned toward the door. The thirty day fight was starting right now. The unfamiliar footsteps filling the corridor were clearly closing on the threshold of the main hall. One last time, Cha Yeonho clenched and released his hand. Even with the feeling gone numb at his fingertips, he stared straight at the person before him. Behind Choi Yul, the one who pushed the door open and stepped in was carrying a red letter stamped with the merchant house's seal. Cha Yeonho pressed his lips shut. This time, he would not let anyone else carry this heavy responsibility in his place. He straightened his back and prepared for the first exchange. The prologue to the thirty days was beginning right at the sect's threshold. Cha Yeonho reached out his hand to receive the letter. A sharp sting of pain shot through his left fingertips once more. The wave shaped mark left by whoever had entrusted that seal was only the beginning.
