The chill of dawn had seeped into the auditor's preparation room, leaving even the air cold. Cha Yeonho sat at the desk and gripped his brush. The joint of his left thumb was twisted at an unnatural angle. The shock that had driven into the bone when he caught the shards of the Reversal Stone on the day of the settlement ceremony still pressed down on the nerve. Cha Yeonho pressed the brush down hard. The tip grew heavy, swollen with ink. He drove it into the paper like a blade, striking the first character. Defendant, Cha Yeonho. A tingling numbness swept down past his elbow. When he forced strength into his fingers, the muscle of his forearm trembled. He rubbed his left hand roughly against the corner of the desk, but the feeling would not return. Biting his lip, Cha Yeonho wrote out, in detail, the circumstances and timing of his violation of the forbidden law, along with the list of Reversal ledgers he had unlawfully examined. Choe Yul opened the door and stepped in, papers in hand. He looked down at the ink-smeared statement, and his brow furrowed.

"For the record, I am asking why you are voluntarily listing your own charges right now."

"Violation of the forbidden law is grounds for expulsion. If the accuser becomes the accused, the nature of the audit itself changes. This stops being an internal corruption inquiry and turns into a public examination of the sect's discipline."

Cha Yeonho pressed his seal to the edge of the paper with a trembling hand. The seal, pushed down hard, left a red stain. Choe Yul lifted the paper carefully and recited the clause.

"For the record, if the accuser submits to interrogation as the accused, the audit proceeds in public. But Disciplinary Scribe Cha, your lineage standing can be stripped immediately depending on the outcome of the interrogation. This is a matter that permits summary expulsion, even without the elders' consensus."

"I know. I wrote my name first, so I should be the first to bear the responsibility."

Cha Yeonho tucked his left hand deep into his sleeve. Every time his fingers brushed the fabric, a needle-like pain shot through them. Choe Yul stared at him for a long moment, then wrote his own name beside the seal.

"The sect leader is looking for you. In front of the archive."

Cha Yeonho rose to his feet. His knee joints had stiffened, and a creaking sound came from them. He stepped out the door without a word. Each stride down the corridor sent the shock of heel against floor traveling up the inside of his legs and into his spine. Jin Mugyeol stood in front of the archive. He smoothed the end of his sleeve neatly and gazed into empty air. When Cha Yeonho approached and stopped, Jin Mugyeol's eyes settled on his fingertips. He saw the faint tremor in Cha Yeonho's hand but cleared his throat, pretending not to notice.

"Yeonho, I heard about what you wrote. If breaking the forbidden law and examining the ledgers was your own choice, stop now, even at this hour. We can still go through a private correction procedure. I will persuade the elders and cover the mistake for you."

"It wasn't a mistake. It was a choice."

Jin Mugyeol took a step closer, reaching as if to grip Cha Yeonho's shoulder, but only fidgeted with his sleeve instead.

"I know how heavy the burden you carry is. But the moment you step into a public interrogation, you become a criminal I can no longer help. Why do you refuse the protection I can give you. If this sect's pillar shakes, you fall with it."

"This is the procedure for finding out whether the pillar has rotted. If I am a criminal who deserves expulsion, then handle me according to the code. But the contradictions between the ledger and the right to teach must be made public exactly as I wrote them in my statement."

Jin Mugyeol's eyes sank deep. His expression mixed the dignity of a sect leader with the bewilderment of a master, and he asked.

"Are you betraying me."

"It isn't betrayal. It's a record. Along with the rules I broke, I will put on the stand the record of whoever erased the ledger and looked away from An Sobin's pain."

Jin Mugyeol pressed his mouth shut. He looked past Cha Yeonho at Choe Yul standing behind him, but Choe Yul only turned the pages of the record book, expressionless. Without a word, Jin Mugyeol shook out his sleeve and turned away. His retreating figure vanished into the darkness of the archive. Cha Yeonho swallowed the heavy pain rising from the bottom of his chest.

By morning, the doors of the public interrogation hall opened. Disciples and officials of Hoeryumun filled the seats. Cha Yeonho sat alone in the witness seat at the center. When his statement was read aloud, a low murmur spread through the hall.

"Defendant, Cha Yeonho. Do you admit to violating the forbidden law."

At Choe Yul's question, Cha Yeonho rose and bowed his head. The pain in his left hand spread numbing through his entire arm. He forced himself to stay standing.

"Yes, I admit it. But my violation was the only means I had to prove that the sect's ledgers were not transparent. The names of the people who should have received the Reversal alongside me had been erased from the ledger."

Cha Yeonho held up the document he had prepared. Among the crowd, An Sobin rose quietly. Without looking back at Cha Yeonho, Sobin walked toward the empty spot in front of the witness seat. Her hand trembled faintly inside her sleeve, but when she stood before the witness seat, she did not meet Cha Yeonho's eyes, and spoke with resolve.

"I will not testify by leaning on the senior disciple's sacrifice. I will speak for myself, about the pain in my own body and the teaching order I was forced into."

Cha Yeonho looked at Sobin and gave a small nod. He stepped down from the witness seat, yielded his place to her, and withdrew to the back of the crowd. Sobin did not hide the trembling hand inside her sleeve, and stared straight ahead.

"Even after the settlement ceremony ended, I had to receive Reversals that were never recorded in the ledger. The elders called the pain in my hand a part of training, but it was the result of someone shifting onto me a burden the sect code had assigned to the Master of Transmission."

The air in the public interrogation hall sank heavy. Cha Yeonho leaned back in his seat and kneaded his left hand. His fingertips were cold and numb. But now he knew he no longer had to carry the burden alone. Sobin's testimony had become a blade tearing through the ledger, shaking the sect's very roots. Near the high seat, Jin Mugyeol listened to Sobin's words with a hardened expression. Cha Yeonho took out his seal again and checked the blank spaces in the audit record he would need to fill in anew. In three days, the record of concealment that had covered the sect would be dug up. Among the crowd, Do Gyeom listened to Sobin's words with his fists clenched tight. Cha Yeonho rose from his seat and stood guarding Sobin's back. Sobin began reciting specific dates and names about how the sect code actually operated. It was the moment the meaning of the two small dots marked beside the young disciples' names in the ledger came to light. Cha Yeonho traced the spacing between those dots again in his mind. It was not a simple mark, but a map showing exactly how Hoeryumun's order had been eating away at people. There would be no more private corrections now. When Sobin finished her testimony, she lifted her head and looked at Cha Yeonho. Cha Yeonho handed the audit record he had been holding to Choe Yul. Choe Yul stamped his seal, fixing the document's authority. Cha Yeonho stepped forward on the cold floor of the interrogation hall. The next order of business he had to attend to stood waiting at the door. Seo Eunseol was waiting for him, holding a copy of the branch ledger. Cha Yeonho patted Sobin's shoulder lightly and walked toward Seo Eunseol. Jin Mugyeol rose from the high seat. Leaving the empty sect leader's seat behind, he walked slowly down the corridor where Cha Yeonho and Seo Eunseol stood facing each other. In his hand he carried a box holding Hoeryumun's seal. Cha Yeonho stopped and looked at the box in Jin Mugyeol's hand. His master's dignity and the sect's survival were both held inside that small box. Cha Yeonho ignored the pain in his left hand, straightened his back, and approached. Seo Eunseol looked at Cha Yeonho and smiled faintly. The copy of the branch ledger in her hand caught the sunlight and gleamed. Cha Yeonho took the ledger from her. The paper felt heavier than usual in his hands. This document recorded the suffering of countless disciples and the traces of the Reversal. To confirm it, to deal with it, and to change the charter so the same thing never happened again, that was the only, and harshest, goal Cha Yeonho had gained by returning through the regression. He looked straight into Seo Eunseol's eyes and opened the ledger. On its first page, connections among names larger and still unknown were coming to light. Cha Yeonho took out his brush again. This time he felt no pain in his left hand. Or rather, he chose not to feel it. He dipped the brush in ink with resolve. The audit period had only just begun. Cha Yeonho turned to the next page of the record and bowed his head toward Jin Mugyeol.

"Master, now is the time for me to fulfill my responsibility."

The crowd held its breath, and Choe Yul prepared to write. The sect's old walls were crumbling, and a new order was pushing through the cracks. Cha Yeonho kept his brush moving to write the first line of that order. The moment Cha Yeonho stood back up despite the pain in his left hand, Hoeryumun's future began flowing in a direction entirely different from before. He turned to look at Sobin. At the point where their two gazes crossed, a new structure of responsibility for the sect was taking root. Without hesitation, Cha Yeonho raised his brush and filled in the blanks of the ledger. At the end of every entry, he wrote in his own name. This was the harshest, and most honest, audit he was capable of. He looked at Sobin once more. She was no longer alone. Cha Yeonho was no longer alone either. Cha Yeonho took Seo Eunseol's hand and gripped the ledger firmly. Now the three days had begun. Cha Yeonho set down his brush and looked at his own hand. The pain in his left hand was still there, but he had learned how to master it. He walked past Jin Mugyeol and out of the interrogation hall. Choe Yul and Sobin followed behind him. Cha Yeonho opened the door and stepped out into the light. This was the first step. He did not look back. He thought only of the ledger before his eyes, and the next entry that needed his name written on it. Behind Cha Yeonho, the doors of the interrogation hall closed. Now he had to complete his own name not as Hoeryumun's senior disciple, but as its Disciplinary Scribe. He took the ledger back from Seo Eunseol. Seo Eunseol whispered to him in a low voice.

"Three days will go by fast."

Instead of smiling, Cha Yeonho gathered up the documents and answered.

"Three days is enough. Enough to turn everything over."

He turned to Sobin and said.

"Sobin, let's go together."

Sobin nodded firmly. The two of them crossed the sect's square and headed for the archive. Their steps were lighter and steadier than before. Shouts from the elders rose behind them, but Cha Yeonho did not stop. He was no longer defending his own name, but proving for himself the way to save the sect. Cha Yeonho opened the door of the archive. Inside, truths not yet erased lay sleeping in dust. Cha Yeonho brushed the dust away and made ready, once more, to write his own name beside the truth. As he stepped into the archive, Seo Eunseol closed the door behind him. Cha Yeonho picked up his brush again. Now, the judgment begins.
