Cha Yeonho's Damp Ledger

Cha Yeonho spread the waterlogged ledger across the worn desk in the clinic room. The paper had swollen limp with salt water, and the ink had bled until the characters were nearly impossible to make out. Baek Miryeong held her breath as she carefully peeled back a corner of the ledger with tweezers. Her fingertips trembled faintly. Her eyes narrowed sharply as she compared the figures in the ledger against the treatment records laid beside it. Cha Yeonho pressed the joint of his left thumb hard with the fingers of his other hand. The joint that had stiffened last night, when he broke the forbidden restraint and took the backlash upon himself, screamed in protest, but he used the pain in his left hand as a marker to steady his breathing. Baek Miryeong set down her tweezers and turned to look at him.
"Cha Yeonho, look at this record. Every figure classified as paired discharge is false. It says two senior disciples split the backlash between them, but the actual traces of treatment are always concentrated on one hand alone."
Cha Yeonho leaned in toward the spot she pointed to. Beside the name listed as the senior disciple, there were no traces of treatment at all. Beside the junior disciple's name, recorded as the pair, the bandage change intervals and medicine usage filled the margin. Paired discharge was only a pretext, a trace of how the backlash that senior disciples should have borne had been pushed onto their juniors. His eyes settled on two small dots stamped in the margin of the ledger. He ran his finger over them and asked.
"Elder sister, the spacing between these dots is consistent. Doesn't it seem like they might mean something other than a medical record?"
Baek Miryeong scanned the ledger again. The elder physician stepped in and cleared his throat to gauge the mood, but she answered without so much as glancing at him.
"This isn't a medical mark. If anything, the structure resembles the daily chore rotation charts we use around here. These aren't marks that appear anywhere in my treatment records."
Cha Yeonho headed straight for the kitchen storeroom. The moment An Sobin saw him, she hurried to hide her hand inside her sleeve. Her face was pale, and without thinking she had wrapped her injured fingers with her other hand. Cha Yeonho held out the ledger and asked.
"Sobin, do you remember what these two dots stamped in this ledger mean?"
An Sobin narrowed her eyes and studied the ledger. With a familiar motion, she drew an old chore chart from her waistband. As her finger traced down the rows, her expression stiffened.
"Senior brother, this is... this is the rotation for cooking rice, or the shift order for carrying firewood. My name has the same two dots next to it too. We mark it this way so the younger disciples don't get confused about whose turn it is. Why is it here?"
Cha Yeonho felt a chill settle in his chest. They had taken the everyday labor marks of the youngest disciples and twisted them into a code for the backlash ledger. The entire system was a fraud. Cha Yeonho gave An Sobin's shoulder a reassuring pat.
"Sobin, the rotation you remember is going to be the evidence that protects us today."
"But is it all right for me to say so? I'm worried this might only put you in more danger, senior brother, on account of me."
"No. Without your testimony, this ledger is nothing more than a bundle of paper. This is your right and your responsibility to claim."
Cha Yeonho brought An Sobin with him to the audit bench. The copies of the branch ledgers that Seo Eunseol had prepared were laid out, and Choe Yul was comparing the records with a strict eye. Jin Mugyeol sat one seat away from the head seat, smoothing the cuff of his sleeve over and over. As Cha Yeonho approached, Jin Mugyeol called out to him.
"Disciplinary Scribe Cha, the three days are almost up. Even now, stopping and settling this quietly would be the path that serves the sect."
Cha Yeonho did not stop. He came to stand before Choe Yul and answered in a voice cold and steady.
"Master, is shielding those who broke the sect code truly the path that protects it? Here is evidence of a falsified ledger. Every record of paired discharge is a systematic forgery."
Choe Yul checked the record, his eyebrows twitching. For the first time since the settlement ceremony, he turned a cold look toward Jin Mugyeol.
"Looking at the record, the structural discrepancy between the treatment logs and the paired discharge entries is clear. This is not an individual mistake, it points to organized forgery. Sect Leader, how do you intend to explain this?"
Jin Mugyeol sighed and looked at Cha Yeonho. Enduring the pain in his left hand, Cha Yeonho made his demand without wavering.
"Suspend the validity of every paired discharge record right now. The three days of audit authority exist to hold the Transmission Elders accountable. Allow us to bring those who falsified the ledger before the judgment stone."
Do Gyeom nodded from the corner of the audit bench. Choe Yul hesitated a moment, then drew out his seal. The suspension stamp cut across the two falsified lines of the ledger. With a heavy thud, the mark of the seal cut off the lies written there.
"As of today, the paired discharge records are suspended. Each Transmission Elder shall, within three days, account for the backlash figures allotted to their own disciples."
The air around the audit bench grew heavy at Choe Yul's declaration. Jin Mugyeol rose from the head seat and looked out toward the door. Cha Yeonho looked to An Sobin and Baek Miryeong. An Sobin's expression was still uneasy, but Baek Miryeong gripped his shoulder tightly. Cha Yeonho checked his left hand. He now had a reason worth bearing the pain for.
As Choe Yul began calling the elders together, Cha Yeonho approached Jin Mugyeol. Jin Mugyeol asked in a low voice.
"Do you truly need all of this brought down before you're satisfied?"
"I'm not bringing it down. I'm setting it right. I only mean to have the disciples share, at last, the responsibility that you, Master, were never able to carry."
Jin Mugyeol left without another word. Seo Eunseol came up beside Cha Yeonho and leaned in to whisper.
"Yeonho, the Transmission Elders are gathered in the storeroom right now. They've given orders to seize the original ledgers you brought. They mean to cover all of this up as a simple clerical error."
Cha Yeonho answered briefly.
"Buy us time before they come to seize the ledgers. Elder sister Baek and Sobin, come with me to the archive. Cross check every mark that's left there, without missing a single one."
Cha Yeonho returned to the audit bench and handed Choe Yul a document that laid out, visually, how the backlash figures had shifted over the past several months. Do Gyeom could not hide his astonishment. The distribution of the figures ran on like a mark following some deliberate rule.
"What is this? This is no simple list of numbers."
"No. This is the real cost that the youngest disciples of the Hoeryu Sect have been carrying."
Do Gyeom clapped Cha Yeonho on the back and said.
"Senior brother, you've really stirred things up now. But we're the ones who'll have to handle whatever comes after."
"We can handle it. Brother Do, all that's left for us now is dividing up the responsibility."
Cha Yeonho ran for the archive. The sun was already setting. The Transmission Elders had stationed themselves in front of the archive. Their eyes were full of open hostility. Feeling the pain tightening in his left hand, Cha Yeonho drew the awl hidden in his sleeve and slipped it between his fingers.
"Cha Yeonho, hand over that ledger. Do that, and we won't hold your wrongdoing against you."
At the Transmission Elder's overbearing tone, Cha Yeonho answered with a face devoid of any humor.
"The ledger belongs to the sect. It does not belong to any one elder. That authority now has to be divided again, alongside the responsibility of the Transmission Elders."
The instant the elder's attack began, Cha Yeonho twisted his body and deflected the force. Taking advantage of the chain of misjudgments that followed, he struck the man's pressure points to subdue him, then whispered.
"Those numbers you've all been covering up. Tonight, you won't be sleeping."
When he opened the door of the archive, Baek Miryeong was waiting, dozens of ledgers spread open before her.
"Yeonho, look at this. These marks, there are far more of them than what Sobin told us. Hidden here are trade records from a lineage bigger than just the younger disciples' rotations!"
The ledgers showed just how deeply the history of the Hoeryu Sect had rotted. They were evidence of a massive political deal struck with the local merchant guild. Cha Yeonho compared them against the charter Choe Yul had certified that morning and the order bearing Jin Mugyeol's seal. Jin Mugyeol had not been trying to protect the sect at all. He had joined hands with greater power to bury his own failure. At that moment, the heavy door swung open and Jin Mugyeol appeared.
"Cha Yeonho, I knew you would come this far. But the moment you open this ledger, you cross a river you can never come back from."
Jin Mugyeol drew out the old seal that carried the sect's final authority to decide.
"You alone will bear the consequences of this choice. Will you still go through with it?"
Cha Yeonho looked back at Baek Miryeong and An Sobin standing behind him. As if his mind was made up, he answered Jin Mugyeol.
"I already am bearing it, Master."
Cha Yeonho held the ledger open toward Jin Mugyeol's seal, the red dots stamped across it like the blood marks of the youngest disciples. Jin Mugyeol's eyes wavered.
"Now you must choose. Will you rewrite the sect's history with this evidence, or sacrifice the disciples all over again to save your own face?"
The air in the archive froze solid. Just then, Choe Yul came rushing in.
"Cha Yeonho, this has turned serious! The outside merchant guild has begun pressuring the sect. If we don't make these ledgers public right now, all of us will be branded traitors!"
Cha Yeonho held the ledger out toward Jin Mugyeol and said.
"Master, now you must decide. Will you sell the sect to the outside merchant guild, or will you disclose this rotten ledger in the name of our disciples?"
The seal slipped from Jin Mugyeol's hand and fell to the floor. With that dull thud, the old order of the Hoeryu Sect came crashing down. Jin Mugyeol spoke, his voice trembling.
"Cha Yeonho, if you disclose this ledger, you will lose your teaching rights, and you yourself will have no place left to stand in this sect. Will you still do it?"
"My place doesn't matter. What matters is that these wounds left on the disciples' hands stop growing."
Cha Yeonho nodded to Baek Miryeong. She began copying out the contents of the ledger, while An Sobin helped verify it by cross checking the chore chart's rotations against the records. Cha Yeonho stood blocking the archive door, listening for the sound of the Transmission Elders closing in. He gathered up the last of the backlash still left in his left hand. He understood that the path he had chosen was a road with no turning back, but his eyes did not waver. What he carried was not the weight of the ledger but the hope of the youngest disciples. He adjusted his grip on the awl hidden in his sleeve. As the candlelight in the archive flickered, he finished bracing himself to face head on whoever tried to break through the door. The night wind rattled the window and threatened the candle flame, but Cha Yeonho's resolve seemed unshakable against any wind. On the table lay the ledger, the suspension stamp Choe Yul had pressed into it still clear and dark. That was the one certain, institutional gain Cha Yeonho had won today.
