The Sound in the Archive

The cold frost wind of the night sky pushed through the gaps in the archive's old wooden door. Cha Yeonho touched the sealing cord wrapped around the door handle with his fingertips. The red seal was taut, showing no sign of tampering, but from beyond the closed door came the dry, repeated sound of paper being torn in long strips. Cha Yeonho pressed hard on his left thumb. The aftershock of the counter recoil he had taken while protecting his junior disciple at the settlement ceremony crawled up his ulna, but he drew a breath without letting his face twist.

"Sister, can you get through that vent down there."

An Sobin said nothing. She quietly rolled up her sleeves. She lowered her body and lay flat against the floor. As she pushed her feet into the opening, Cha Yeonho bent down to help her. At that moment his left hand trembled unevenly and the fist he'd been holding came loose. He hid it behind his back.

"Don't rush. Once you're inside, don't light a candle. First, track the location of the record cabinets and where that tearing sound is coming from, with your eyes only."

An Sobin's body disappeared into the darkness. A moment later, a dull scraping sound came from inside, followed by the clatter of hurried footsteps running across the archive floor. Someone seemed to have slipped out through the back door. Baek Miryeong pushed past Cha Yeonho's shoulder and held a thin glass vial up to the vent gap. Vapor from the medicine inside the vial formed a long trailing band along the path the intruder had taken.

"The seal's untouched, but it's a mess in there. Cha Yeonho, this doesn't match the footprints of that elder from your regression memory. The stride is much shorter, and the center of gravity is lower."

At Baek Miryeong's assessment, Cha Yeonho turned toward the front entrance. Choe Yul, who had been delegated audit authority, was walking down the corridor with a torch.

"For the record, I'm beginning the seal removal procedure. Both of you, step back."

Choe Yul checked the seal in a voice stripped of emotion. As the lock turned and the door opened, a sharp smell of salt hit them. The archive floor was strewn with damp footprints and scraps of ledger paper soaked in saltwater. When Cha Yeonho reached out to pick up one of the scraps, Baek Miryeong caught his wrist and stopped him.

"Don't touch it. Your fingertip sense can't read numbers accurately right now because of the counter recoil. The moment you touch that wet paper, the ink will smear and the numbers will disappear."

Baek Miryeong took out tweezers and a medicinal powder and sprinkled it over the scrap. Cha Yeonho stared at two faint dots hidden beneath it. The spacing was distinctly different from the disciples' records he'd seen in his previous life. Choe Yul added, his pen moving across the record sheet.

"If we compare this against the copy of the branch ledger Seo Eunseol agreed to hand over, we should be able to tell what was erased. But in exchange for providing the copy, she demanded authority over one seat of Transmission Master."

Cha Yeonho shoved his left hand into his pocket. The seat of Transmission Master was a brutal shackle, one that made its holder answerable for every injury and every counter recoil suffered by that disciple. Cha Yeonho looked Choe Yul straight in the eye.

"I'll pay that cost. If the condition is making clear exactly who the responsibility of Transmission Master belongs to, I'll accept it."

Choe Yul's brow twitched slightly. He wrote Cha Yeonho's statement into the record. With every step Cha Yeonho took toward the medical room, pain shot through his left ankle like an arrow.

When he arrived at the medical room, An Sobin was already mixing a saline solution with practiced ease. Cha Yeonho picked up a brush, but his fingers went slack and it fell to the floor.

"Senior brother, let me. I know your hand tremors better than anyone when it comes to handling medicine. Just wait, I'll do it."

An Sobin all but pulled the brush out of his hand. She wrapped cotton around the tip of the tweezers and carefully dabbed away the moisture along the edges of the wet paper. As the saltwater dried, the blurred numbers began to take shape. An Sobin murmured.

"This record looks like something I saw during training. It's almost identical to the figures from the day you took the counter recoil in my place at the settlement ceremony."

Cha Yeonho examined the numbers on the ledger. As the damaged section was restored, two dots beside the names of the young disciples came into sharp relief. They marked a damage grade, but the name of whoever had given the order had been erased. Baek Miryeong checked Cha Yeonho's pulse. There were signs the counter recoil was starting to flow backward through his meridians.

"You've gone past your limit. Your body can't take any more. Sobin and I will finish restoring this record, so you get into that bed right now."

Cha Yeonho shook his head. He took the sheet of paper An Sobin held out to him. It was a ledger scrap recovered that night. On it was written a disciple's name, one unfamiliar, absent from the Hoeryumun roster. It was new evidence, something he, even having lived through this once before, had never seen, evidence that could shake the very history of the sect. Cha Yeonho rubbed his left thumb again. The pain stabbed sharp enough to pierce his skull, but he picked up the pen.

"Sister, take this ledger to Examiner Choe Yul. And tell him: for the record, in accordance with our sect's principle of Transmission Master responsibility, I am requesting an immediate re-audit."

An Sobin nodded without a word. Baek Miryeong pushed Cha Yeonho's back down onto the bed. Memory couldn't be trusted. Only the footprints left at the scene, the dampness of the paper, and the pain his body was paying right now were the truth. Just then the medical room door opened and Choe Yul walked in. In his hand was the copy of the branch ledger sent by Seo Eunseol.

"Disciplinary Scribe Cha, this is the copy Seo Eunseol sent. The moment you open this, you will be exercising the authority of Transmission Master, and at the same time, taking on final responsibility for every counter recoil incident within the sect. This is your last chance to refuse."

Choe Yul set the sealed document down on the worktable. Its weight pressed down on Cha Yeonho's chest. The moment he accepted it, he would step onto a path there was no turning back from. Cha Yeonho didn't hesitate. He picked up the pen and wrote his name on the document.

"If a seat of responsibility is what it takes to tear this system down and rebuild it, then I'll sit in that seat."

Cha Yeonho handed the signed document back to Choe Yul. Choe Yul took it without a word and left. Cha Yeonho lay back and looked at his left hand. The pain hadn't faded, but now, at least, its reason was clear. He signaled to An Sobin with his eyes to check the next set of figures.

Morning was breaking. Cha Yeonho watched the faint light through the window and sensed that the path he'd chosen would not be smooth. But as the ledger scraps proved, Hoeryumun was changing, bit by bit. Cha Yeonho picked up the brush again.

"Sobin, let's push a little further. This salt residue on the edge of the scrap, it isn't just moisture. It's mud from near the water gate, the kind that gets tracked in on an intruder's feet."

An Sobin's eyes widened as she leaned in over the paper again.

"Now that you mention it... the spacing of these spots is exactly like the marks Senior Taeram uses when sorting medicinal herbs."

Cha Yeonho leaned back against the bed and stared hard at the spot.

"Taeram... one of the people who manages the archive keys. So this is proof it isn't the elder from my memory, but someone inside helping them."

Cha Yeonho felt a cold certainty settle in him. The arrogance of trying to pin down the culprit based on memories from his past life had nearly cost him the evidence right in front of him. Baek Miryeong grabbed his hand and pushed him back down onto the bed, speaking sternly.

"That's enough deducing. Your body is overloaded right now. Keep thinking and your meridians will snap. This mark Sobin restored, that's solid physical evidence, enough to overturn things during the audit period. So sleep, right now. If you collapse, there's no one left to testify to this evidence."

Cha Yeonho read unwavering resolve in Miryeong's cold gaze. He closed his eyes without protest. The medical room filled with nothing but the rustle of brush against paper and the faint sound of saltwater evaporating. A while later, Choe Yul's footsteps sounded outside. He made a sound as though flipping back through the document, then spoke quietly.

"For the record, the authority of Transmission Master has been activated. Disciplinary Scribe Cha, submit all evidence at tomorrow morning's hearing."

What Choe Yul had handed over wasn't simply a document. It was the new burden of Hoeryumun that Cha Yeonho would have to carry, and the first blueprint of the future he meant to change. Cha Yeonho opened his eyes, feeling the texture of the document still in his grip. The cold air of dawn had filled the room. He took the teacup An Sobin offered him. Its warmth eased the pain in his left hand for a moment.

"Sister, at tomorrow's hearing, testify exactly as I told you. Answer only what they ask, and say nothing beyond the figures in the ledger."

An Sobin nodded. In her eyes was resolve, not fear. Cha Yeonho looked at the old candlestick by the window. The flame flickered in the wind but did not go out. He clenched and unclenched his left hand once more. Pain shot through every joint as though the bones themselves were slipping out of place, but it was also a sign that he was still alive.

"For the record, all preparations are complete. Now, it's time to turn this board over."

The moment Cha Yeonho muttered this to himself, rough footsteps sounded outside the medical room door. The voice of the settlement hall elder came from outside.

"Disciplinary Scribe Cha, I'm coming in. I've brought the Transmission Master verification ledger, check it right now."

Cha Yeonho met An Sobin's eyes. Baek Miryeong pressed an acupuncture needle into his hand and gave him a short warning.

"The moment you cross that threshold, you're not a patient anymore, you're the Disciplinary Scribe. Don't try to hide the pain. Use it instead, as grounds to tear apart their logic."

Cha Yeonho rose from the bed and straightened his clothes. The pain in his left foot was severe, but he made an effort not to limp as he walked toward the door. The ledger scrap that had exposed the archive's secret felt heavy inside his sleeve. Everything about Hoeryumun would now be decided within this room. His fingers tightened on the door handle. As he opened the door, the cold dawn air poured in, along with the oppressive presence of the settlement hall elder. Cha Yeonho faced the elder, turned his left hand behind his back, and held his head up straight. Only a few hours remained before the hearing. In that time, he had to complete the testimony that would change the fate of the sect.
